No, not the 747 over Sakhalin, this was a 707 well off course which came down in a hurry after Soviet fighter planes shot the end of one wing off near Karelia in deepest Russia five years prior to that one. I suppose everyone needs a hobby - some people take photos, some people do flight simming, some people breed orchids, some people shoot down KAL Boeings ...

The article says the plane was stripped right down to component parts and taken away for study, were there any 707-like russian airliners from the early 80's ?

Nothing in the lines or design of a 707 , there counterpart the IL-62 would have suited there needs , the IL-86 would be the closes in layout but much larger .

Pleased you dug the photos Gary , the Kola Peninsular crash was talked and compared to the 1983 shootdown off the 747 .
