So flying a 300 knot (if that) aircraft looking for ships etc at low level, requires Mach 1.8 fast jet training? K.

Not sure where you get that idea from? When I say fast jet training I was only referring to advanced pilot training that was done in the Strikemaster/Macchi. Then made the comparison, that the modern day equivalent is now done using planes such as the PC-9. Sorry for confusion.

I had the luxury of either the herc or 727, even did one trip in a kingair. You're showing your age Splitpin! winkyy.gif

Yes winkyy.gif...i think i am HF, it was luxury to eventually get to go to Fiji on a P-3 (02)... i wasnt that sad to see the freighters go, but the daks....that was sad.
I guess Im lucky enough to have flown on every type we operated from 74 onwards...except the 757 and the Aermacchi. Had some awful freighter flights....most of the time i was the only pax...wedged in amongst whatever they were hauling at the time....one trip, i was assigned to a row boat and given a strop to hold to for take off and landing....cant imagine it being allowed today.

Highlights would be, nap of the earth flight (NOE) in a souix and later a Huey.....marijuana hunting with the police in a huey(several times)....and dropping a bomb or two on the clyde dam in an A-4., coming back from OZ in a 72 with four A-4's in formation( i think the 727 was faster)....just magic.

Had a few trips in visiting aircraft as well, RAAF 748, CAF Argus, and a USAF WC-130(weather bird).....good times never to be forgotten....Ive even got some photos i took light years ago of RAAF Hercs ..A models(3 props) and neptunes on the line at Whenuapai.......Im a fossil unsure.gif

Ridiculous as it seems the private collectors beat the govt hands down , a quote from our most well knowing P-51 pilot , "Scabs of the Pacific" , entire A4 fleet , maybe could be saved by people like this , i dout it tho , political agenda .. 'Pattsy Wongs' example , they said it cost to much to run a Strike Wing ... , and still the heritage dies .

Dambusters - Lancaster? I've often wondered what would happen to the mockups after the movie?

Not sure where they ended up but after filming here they offered one to the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aeroclub as a static display but they turned it down because of the upkeep on keeping it clean and presentable would of been to much

Yes absolutely. Aircraft sitting outside a real handful to keep in good shape. Something the size of the Lanc would be a huge amount of work.
