Masterton belly landing

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby cambridgedan » Fri Jan 21, 2011 8:39 pm

The masterton air show is almost be coming
Famous for aircraft landing on their bellys.
Sadly the new vampire jet this afternoon seemed to
Do a bit of a stall after a long low approach and seemed to
Tap it's wing on the runway and landed quite hard on one wheel
Causing the undercarriage to calapse and leave the amazing looking aircraft
To slide down the runway.

Pilot is fine and walked away although the aircraft took quite a hard hit

I can imagine info will be in the news tomorrow.

The NEW Vampire??? Do you mean the Venom? That would be about right if something had crashed a few days before the show.

Hi All,

Some good pics here http://rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board...1519&page=4

of the landings .... Vampire with a broken leg and Venom on it's belly. Looks like cr@p weather a major factor.

This is the first WoW airshow I've missed in a few years now, having moved to Hawkes Bay from Masterton nearly two years ago.

I miss the sounds of the v12's and big radials in the circuit over my house on airshow weekend ... runnin' in an outa the house all day! smile.gif

If Fireman Sam had a Venom, that is what it would look like! laugh.gif

Glad to see the pilot is all right, hope the Venom can be repaired.

talking to a few of the people involved it seems the aircraft will need a great deal of work to be flying again, the airframe was stressed quite heavily,
its a real shame, it is such a nice aircraft, but i think the main point is the pilot (wont name) is ok

Why can't these guys operate vintage equipment with the respect that it deserves? Just look at the weather and ask yourself "What were they thinking?"
Two very precious aircraft damaged and one seriously...and for what?

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Was Brett flying the Venom?

Thought he would have being flying his Vampire or Albatross

So sad sad.gif
I was lucky enough to be at Ardmore (unknowlingly) to see the 2nd(?) flight of the Venom:

Here is an ignorant question, what is the difference between a Vampire and a Venom? unsure.gif

off the top of my head the Venom has more thrust, different wing (swept leading edge). Also the Vampires currently flying in NZ are two seaters (there are single seat Vampires but none flying here atm) whilst the Venom is single seater - there are probably other differences but those are the main ones

Not any real difference , Vampire Goblin powered and Venom more powerful Ghost , only by couple thousand pound of trust but making it 2/3 rds more powerful .

Well done ....no one hurt, so lets move on, Im sure the "experts" (and their all Venom pilots of course dry.gif )will be feasting on this for months.........as they say s**t happens, the pilot did a damm fine job, the aircraft needs a bit of work, what's too talk about?
