Flightsim - another use !

Recently one of the Editors of CAA's Vector magazine asked me if they could use a screenshot of my FSX Fletcher cockpit to illustrate an article they were writing, as they could not find anything suitable. I was happy to oblige.
The finished article and image is one pages 16 & 17 of the Jan/Feb 2011 edition. The results are pretty good too: Vector Magazine (PDF)

I didn't contribute in any way except that I built the model. They got the screenshot from somewhere and did all the graphic work.

Deane , I would love to get a copy off the very magazine , it follow,s a history , following your , the early days of the Huey , in recent the Fletch/Cresco type which is in so much demand , brilliant !

I wonder how much interest they would have in the pros and cons of using flightsim as a way to practice real life flight?

I hired a plane , instructor of course in command to the right of me , mate in the back seat , taxing out on grass 29 at NZCH , i instantly adjusted the compass and alt , questioned by the instructor 'you have flown before ' only to have Ruben in the back say many thousand hours in flightsim , that afternoon i did six landings and takeoffs out off West Melton , one made the instructor jump as i pulled the flap up , a little wind dip , yip you can use FS and apply it to real life .

Ive heard a lot of the same from instructor friends....very interesting.

Those are the pros of course....but there are many cons: I for one 'flew by the instruments' a lot when I started flying in real life as that was the best way to accurately judge height/pitch in early FS- It took a while before I learned to fly with my eyes outside and to confirm what I was seeing with instruments. There is also the issue of being 'self taught' on an American biased sim with no feedback from NZ qualified instructors- Incorrect habits can be hard to break!

However, when used in conjunction with proper flight training, FS can be a great tool....one just needs to recognize its limitations (i.e. ensure your 'yard stick' is real life rather than the sim)

Same - I didn't nail things like steep turns properly until I finally listened to my instructor and looked at the nose in relation to the horizon, occasionally confirming on the instruments, rather than looking at the instruments too much and trying to chase the dials.
