GTX-460

[Splitpin]

Quick question, i have been very kindley given a GeForce GTX-460 Graphics card (Its a huge thing) At the moment I have an old radeon x1650 (512mb )AGP.

Now....the GTX is PCI....but my motherboard (Asus P5VDC-MX) has provision for a PCI slot and slots for a different type of ram.
Question is....can i put a pci thing on the board and use the new card? I dont really want to have to (cant afford it anyway) do the whole board upgrade thing if possible.

I think i know the answer anyway....but just thought i would run by you............Im just sick of seeing things like smoke effects rendered as large black squares.

Please advise me gurus.

If you have a compatible PCI slot then I don't see what the problem is!
Give it a go, pull out the agp card, install the pci card and see if windows recognises it- If so, then you can go about cleaning up the old agp card drivers etc.

My board is also an ASUS P5 (QL/EPU) and I'm running a GTX460 - a beautiful card, stays cool and, with the AA tweak, works great.

Hi Splitpin, i just viewed the manual for your motherboard and your PCIexpress slot is only the little short x1 slot. You need a PCIexpress x16 to suit your 460 and your boards main graphics slot is an old AGP slot so your fears are true. You will also need a power supply with dual pci express 6 or 8 pin power plugs depending what the 460 requires. Also most of the new boards take DDR3 ram but there are plenty of older types around with the DDR2 still available but if your going to spend money you may as well get up to date hardware. Sorry to break the bad news.

Sometimes I wish I understood everything I know but, then again..... The idea behind the tweak is to force your 1gb or more Nvidia card to do more of the work thus sparing your CPU some of the load. Using 'Nvidia Inspector', a freebie replacement for 'Enhancer', go to the 'Antialiasing' section and highlight 'Antialiasing setting'. On the dropdown menu select 'AA_MODE_METHOD_VCAA_16X_4v12' and apply. Don't know if this automatically sets up your Nvidia Control Panel so you ought to make sure that 'Global' and 'Program' have changed. Visually things look better but that could be wishful thinking - my average screenshot finished, jpeg size has increased 100-200 kb. Apparently the idea originated in Germany and forum talk can be found on SOH and AvSim. Just noticed I said basically the same thing in 'FSX' - hell to get old.

Where do I get Nvidia Inspector? I have tried their website but can't seem to locate - sorry to be a PITA!!!

Did you get nvidia inspector up and running Doug? I've been meaning to ask you. I have updated my drivers, removed nhancer, and am now just using inspector for FS9 and X - and all good.
