Here's another "Bear encounter", this time it's a Navy Rhino:

I posted this previously, but always like to think about this:
When the Kuznetsovs are running on that bird, they produce more power than most NZ power stations.

Hmmm - let me calculate:
According to wikipedia, each of those monstrous engines generates 15.000 hp.
15.000 hp x 0,735 x 4 = 44.100 kW = 44 MW.

So you don't have any big power stations down there, eh? laugh.gif

Another tidbit:
The Tu-95 is said to have the biggest radar cross section in aviation, due to the contra-rotating metal props.
Looking at this pic

it isn't hard to imagine how intensive the radar waves got reflected by these fans...

Cheers,
Markus.

We do...but NZ makes extensive use of distributed generation: geothermal, hydro, gas, and wind power generator sets.
There are no nukes, of course, and only one big coal-burner at Huntly: 1435MW
NZ has one of the highest percentages of renewable electricity generation in the world as a result - more than 70%.

This is all a long way from the Bear topic...actually I checked again: 42% of NZ gensets are under 44MW so it's not true to say "most".
SO:
When the Kuznetsovs are running on that bird, they produce more power than 40% of NZ power stations.

With noise complaints they get now from frost fans I can just imagine what the complaints would be like if they were running a couple of those for frost protection pirate.gif
