Actually Ian, to quote the guy who installed my internet connection when I first moved here - Paraparaumu is right between "two wind traps - Wellington and Palmy"...so we get much less wind, and much better weather. Don't be fooled by the idiots on TV who describe the weather for the Kapiti coast in the same breath as Wellington's...it's MUCH different - its always warmer here, and much less windy. So there
Besides...since when does 50km away count as "around Welly" ???

Not really - its a nature reserve - one of the few certified "predator free" islands - it's used as a haven for native birdlife, especially rare and endangered species like the Takahe, for example. Dept of Conservation permission is required to get onto the island, and there are a few walking tracks to the summit (some 500 odd metres *straight up* pretty much). I went up there last year with my daughters school class, and the view from the top is awesome. The Southern Trust DC3 was doing flights out of NZPP that day, and we were looking *down* on it from the summit as it flew out and around the island

You take a 250kg CBX1100 two pax and backpack gear , little over the limit maybe 120/30 kph admitted it gets gusty , in my eight trips X2 return off course happened 50% was ... lean the weight but be prepare for the very dangerous release then it punch,s you again .
This eased off normally around Otaki - Levin and even further up , one trip from Ohakea return to Welly was as ruff as heck , the classic was the South Island after leaving Nelson heading Blenhiem .... Gusty oh boy!! the internet guy was probably blowing windLast edited by Ian Warren on Mon Apr 25, 2011 2:13 pm, edited 1 time in total.

You are quite right - Parararaumu does not suffer the same wind problem as it more open and exposed. When I was commuting from Blenheim to Wellington weekly with Air2there, I arrived one rainy windy night to a very packed Blenheim airport for my regular Sunday night flight. All flights into Wellington had been cancelled, even ANZ ones as passengers were being blown over on the tarmac. The winds were way beyond limits for the Cessna Caravans, but Air2there, said Paraparaumu was well within limits and were happy to take us all there. The upshot was - I got to Wellington via paparaumu and then train, the rest of the passenges on Soundsair and ANZ were stuck in Blenheim. Once ANZ start regular flights (to/from Auckland) from Pram, it will be interesting to see if Pram will be used more by them when Welly airport is closed.
