Wellington home to Nelson

I am currently doing a bit of a NZ tour, to explore some of VLC with. After flying Dunedin to Wellington, my next leg is home to Nelson. After seeing the P51D from Warbirdsim (again) I went looking for a freeware FSX P51, and came up with this T6 Texan instead from Warwick Carter. (I've since found updated and nicer textures for it, but not until after this flight). Either way, was still a nice trip across Cook Strait, and over the Marlborough Sounds to Nelson.

Climbing out of NZWN over Mt Victoria

Hello Wellington! Sorry if the drone of my engine doesn't agree with your hang over!

Looking north up the coast towards Kapiti Island. About to level off to stay beneath the cloud for VFR. Heck, this plane doesn't even have a GPS let alone anything IFR capable.

But with the Sounds just out front, who needs a map

Overhead Beatrix Bay

Looking back over my right shoulder towards North West Bay/ Wilson Bay

Weather is nice where we are heading, but it's probably snowing up on those mountains this time of year. Need to stay low and out of those clouds

Tasman Bay ahead, and so is Pepin Island, directly in front of us

Arriving into Nelson, heading directly for the field at this point, but expecting to land from the south. I can see my work from here, guess I'm 'arriving' back in Nelson just in time to go tomorrow tongue.gif

Overhead the Boulder Bank (such an original name) and Haulashore Island, looking back on Nelson

Rabbit Island and Bell Island as I bank off to begin my approach for 02

My home town of Richmond

And final to land at NZNS. Grab-a-seat from Air NZ at $59 would have been cheaper, but no where near as interesting smile.gif

Cheers for looking

I really enjoyed that little story! I'd be interested to see the new textures you got, as the ones in the pics didn't look bad either! Is that fs9.gif or fsx.gif?

Cheers! I'm glad you did smile.gif
Here are some shots wearing the updated textures. Panel lines show up a bit better now. There are some really nice details on this model. The VC is great. I really like the back wheel having writing on the tyre, little things like that.
Oh yes, definately on FSX.

virtual cockpit is nice

Ready to roll

Almost up

Great shots there. I love the simple shot looking towards Kapiti.
I've been putting together a photo scenery Nelson for a while now, so haven't seen VLC Nelson for a while, but it's amazing what a good job VLC does of the area.

Thanks gentlemen! I too love the look of VLC around Nelson. It really does a great job of the colours of the area. Very much a dryish brown most of the year, plus all the forestry of course.
And Ian I'm not sure what you mean by that comment lol I was raised in Richmond, and fell in love with aeroplanes as the approach for 02 goes close to my house. I used to be able to pull the curtains back while I was in bed, and watch the planes fly by my window. Lots of Fokker Friendships, HS748s, Metroliners, Saabs, Jetstreams etc as I grew up (and grew old) smile.gif My parents still live in that house and I still enjoy watching them fly by now when I visit.

Ahhh.. ok Ian! Yes, Wigram would be an interesting airport to grow up around. Especially 'back a little further in time' before me perhaps winkyy.gif biggrin.gif When it was actually an RNZAF base I mean!

By the way if anyone knows of some place with repaints for this plane, I'd appreciate a heads up on it. It really seems under appreciated in that regard. (i've just found kcgb's repaint thread on here but more would be nice)

Alister ... I grabbed that Harvard (thanks) ... it's good, isn't it? Shame there are no NZ repaints for it - considering how many Harvards we have here.

However - I seem to get some serious lighting issues at certain angles (I'm in DX10 preview mode). See how bleached out this is:

... and how the canopy is milky:

I haven't tried it in non-DX10, but have noticed this happening with a few aircraft in the past.

I suspect it may happen with models that have been converted from FS9 <?>. Any clues anyone?

Adam , DX10 will be the cause, I would prefer to use 10 but have many issues myself , I have not tried the model , really only due the spinner cover , no RNZAF Harvard or NZ relelated had the nose cone , the external model on the other had is extremely well done and the VC is 'Crikey' Great .. all the photo material out there , Ham - AKA 'HamiltonWest ' with his closeups , be worth contacting Warrick for a mod winkyy.gif

I am pretty sure this is a build for FSX, I could be wrong. If you are looking for the RNZAF repaint, kcgb has done it, in this thread, post number 20 is the repaint for the updated aircraft:
http://nzff.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11376

Enjoy, and thanks kcgb for the paint winkyy.gif

I think the paint on this plane is a little weird myself, and I don't have DX10

Ian - you're quite right. DX10 is the culprit. Sadly, I generally prefer it!

DX9

Here's KCGB's repaint - DX10

DX9

Do any repainters here know if it's easy to fix this lighting issue? Is it anything to do with the specular or bump DDS textures - or is it a basic alpha channel tweak? Totally outta my depth here!

Also - do people find the Warwick Carter model (fine as it is) vastly under-powered? I can hardly get it to climb or loop. I've seen them being thrown about the sky in RL many a time and they seem to climb like rockets!

I find it quite underpowered too.. Even with reducing the fuel load. It's fine at cruise, just a struggle to get there lol Sorry I can't help on the other issue!
