Actually Ian, I think the civvy operators had wire cutters on choppers way before the military. Certainly in NZ anyway.

For the record - this is a list of the Civil UH-1's in NZ:

HHB Beck Helicopters Bell (Garlick) UH-1B
HUE Central South Island Helicopters Bell (Garlick) UH-1L
HSP Lakeland Helicopters Bell (HH) UH-1H
HZX Lakeland Helicopters Bell (HH) UH-1H
HSX Lakeland Helicopters Bell (RHH) UH-1H
HJX Lakeland Helicopters Bell (RHH) UH-1H
HHF Beck Helicopters Bell (Tamarack) UH-1F
HHU Beck Helicopters Bell (Tamarack) UH-1P
HYG Lakeland Helicopters Bell (Williams) UH-1H

UH-1H's are the same as the RNZAF, all the other models are older shorter fuse models.
My understanding is that the names in brackets (i.e Garlick) are the names of the companies which are approved to convert military Hueys to civilian status. Bell did produce civil Huey models - the 204 and 205, but ex military machines can not be converted to carry those designations.

I can't remember rego of the Lakeland Huey that crashed recently on the beach near Levin?

Well its simple to say least the civil,s had some sence , now .. got me thinking .. very typical ? were they devolped here , NZ always at the forefront of safety design .
