The internet and advertisments

A forum for everything else that does not fit into the other categories

Postby AlisterC » Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:40 pm

After Sundayflyer's post in the other thread, I thought I'd post a screenshot of my version of the internet. It may be common knowledge to you and me, but perhaps not everyone knows that you can have a better internet experience without advertising!

Both Firefox and Chrome have "extensions" available that you can 'install' into your browser, and they allow all sorts of things. One of my favourites is Adblock. I woudn't be without it now!

Here are a couple of shots in operation..

1.. The default view of the internet, as you'd see without it installed, or as you'd see with internet explorer

2.. And my view with Adblock turned on.

Note how much tidier that is? Plus, I have the added benefit that the page loads faster, and i'm not wasting my monthly bandwidth downloading a flashy ad that I'll never visit anyway. Plus I don't have these animated ads distracting my attention from what I am doing. The internet is a much nicer place without them! And it's all so simple. If you come across an ad during your browsing that doesn't happen to be blocked, or an image on a website you'd rather not see, just right click, add a filter, and you'll never see it again. Or, do you have a site that you actually WANT to see their ads? Set adblock to be disabled permanently on that site. It's that simple.

Sorry if you know all this, but then, if I can help one person out get rid of these ads, my job here is done!

Enjoy

Good post, Alister!
I just installed Adblock for Chrome (and donated 10 bucks to the clever dude who wrote it)
Different browser, now...
I had taken to using "Stealth Mode" which disables cookies, since I had a little cookie indigestion.
Trouble was, I didn't want to flush the lot because half a dozen or so were useful (Auto logins etc)
This is really working for me, even this site now just... pops up.
Thanks!

You can also right click images and block them, using * wildcards to block all of a certain style (ie google ads). I wouldn't be without it.

Other extensions I use:

Download helper (for saving FLV's off Youtube, TV on demand etc)

Gmail Checker (also checks pop mail - it checks all my accounts, you can review and delete / mark as read) your mail without using an email program or going to individual web mail sites

Fire FTP - great for quick FTP access in your browser

Great idea for a thread, Alister smile.gif

Also - the Photobucket Uploader add on works well too smile.gif

Finally - people aren't going to like this one .... but turning off signatures in your options for many sites (incl here) makes pages load much faster and you can read more replies per page rather than scrolling past banner signoffs.... especially good if you want to read the forum on the move via an ipod, iPhone etc

Wow, I'm glad I could actually help you guys out with this. Gmail checker sounds interesting Matt, and I must find that photobucket uploader..
I'll look into it.

FYI Charl I think Adblock on Chrome is the better of the two, but after a spate of Chrome crashes (blue screen) I went back to Firefox for the time being (I am actually running 3.6 firefox due to V4 crashes too)
Oh well, as long as I have my Adblock, all is good.
Cheers
