Political Correctness or just old fashioned and bad taste?
I think it would be awful to keep the "N" word.
Do they even need to mention its name?

You know...times change, fashions change, words change.
If a word has taken on a different meaning, or become offensive, there are many ways simply not to use it.

I have a Border Collie called Jake, who thinks his name is Dog, or perhaps Fella.
"Shaddup, Dog!"
"Sit! Good Dog - Stay!"
"Come along, Ole Fella..."
"Feed the Dog"
No problem.

It's a Hollywood movie, it's not meant to be historically accurate in the first place, and never can be entirely accurate. If this were a book I'd be concerned but I'm not particularly.

The "N" word has always been offensive, its just that being racist used to be normal.
Anyway, how much does the dog feature in the movie? Can't they just call it "boy"?

Hollywood relies on the widest possible audience, which pretty much ensures PC-ness. I wouldn't expect anything else in this particular case, and I wouldn't get annoyed by it, although I was a bit annoyed to read that they won't deal with any anti-China themes, (and by definition, pro-Tibet) as they are going after more and more of the Chinese market.

Well Im disgusted. The dogs name is still on his headstone at Scampton, there hasnt been an outcry about that. n****r was also one of the codewords for breaching the dams, FACT. It isnt offensive. African Americans call each other n****r all the time. It seems that its only offensive when a white person uses it. Its the latin word for black for gods sake so its been around for a while. ITV in the UK got slammed for cutting the word out of the origional film when they broadcast it so they re-screened it with all 12 uses of the word. How can anybody be SERIOUSLY offended by it in a historical context? Robs probably right however that if they want to get bums on seats then they have to change history. *rant mode off*

So I expect with all this overrated PC it would also be deemed offensive if they changed the dogs name to Blackie instead of using the "N" word

Ha Ha exactly.

No different to whitey, blackie, brownie, Palangi, albino etc.

I am no racist (even learnt te reo a few years back as got sick of moaning about the claims etc), and you cant complain if you do not learn the culture.
Awesome, I would recommend these studies to all kiwi's.

The marae is one of the best places, just like your family home but escalated. You are welcomed no matter what race.

Hence I do not feel the genuine Kiwi Paheka, Maori, PI, or any other person that classed themselves a New Zealander would take offence.

I hope i am not wrong, people are people. family is family, just like NZFF smile.gif

Erm, the N word IS OFFENSIVE!
African Americans in general DON'T call themselves the N word, that's something "homeboys", "gangstas" etc use. I am sure their grandparents would be mortified to hear them say it, just as our grandparents would hate to see our young generation using the "Heil Hitler" salute.
(Was it Die Hard 3 where McLean had to go to somewhere like downtown Harlem wearing a sandwich board that said "I hate N*****s" because it would offend them?)

I wouldn't have a problem with "Blackie", because (I assume) the dog is black.

The word by itself isnt offensive, its about context and by the way, African Americans do call each other 'n****r' Watching 'Americas Hardest Prisions' or other rubbish proves that. The dogs name was n****r and was a much loved animal who was killed the day before the raid thats history, you cant hide it. Enough said.

I re-watched the movie last night , yeah surprise surprise , they used the the word 9/10 time at least and 'Nig*er' was an important part off the team , for at least moral , today's world , i think all our dark coloured friends would simply be chuffed , i,m going to go down the back flat in the morrow and see what they think , hopeful and personally get them on the site to post there feelings , Oh PS : that's after i lend them the movie to see what all the rark up is about .

Thats what I say, its all about context. Your not calling a person n****r, your calling a doggie n****r, theres a difference. Its selective racism, African Americans are allowed to call each other whatever but its offensive when a white person does it. One of the strange things in society.
