Advice Needed.

I will write this whilst she is not watching!!

I am finding that whenever I query the price of anything that the other half wants to buy (the latest was some kind of face powder at such an exhorbitant price that you would think you were buying a complete box of the stuff), the argument is that I spent x thousand on 'that' computer. I could try telling her that face powder is washed off the same day, whereas my computer will last many years, or perhaps I could try telling her that she does not need face powder or perfumes, but she now has the ammunition. Any discussion in a shop seems to lead to a comment about how much 'that' computer cost.

I am trying to convert her to FSX as a cheaper alternative to buying perfumes/face creams/lotions. The price of FSX add-ons does not seem so bad when I see how much perfumed 'water' costs.

You will never win. I bought components and make my dream system about 6 or more years ago now. All up it was budget priced and I have scrounged parts and upgrades ever since. Needless to say it's woefully inadequate now to run any games.

However, I have not been allowed to forget it ever since. Anytime we have to buy anything for the home or her and I query the need I am reminded of the money I spent on "that computer" over the years! Then there's the motorbike that I actually sold for more than I bought it for but somehow it remains a real drain on our finances... I daren't mention to her about the parking tickets, fines for no registration (even though I reminded her for weeks to go and get the registration she kept forgetting), her student loan that's costing an arm and a leg and so on and so on...

It's a lose / lose situation I'm afraid!! But we do love them < just in case she reads this lol

My 2c worth which kept the peace for me in the past.
Try allocating to each other an equal and agreed nominated amount weekly or so, that you can call "mad money" or something.
This can be spent by both on whatever you fancy whenever you wish without bilateral agreement or saved for future Flight Sim 'investments" , face powder etc.
Anything over and above this by mutual agreement.

Find a way to make a bit of money on the side and under her radar and keep it hidden, seperate accounts/credit card the lot. What she dos't know wont hurt her. And if she is like most woman and dont know a thing about computors or aviation, she wont notice any incrementle changes to you system. Hell i just changed my case so that I could fit a water Cooler in and my wife didnt notice. A black case is a black case.....Wright??

I mean would you notice any changes to your wifes bulging wardrobe or cluttered jewlrey box if it wasnt for there bragging and credit card bills?? I didnt think so.

Been down this road myself and solved using the idea Brad put forward. We both claim a weekly "allowance" for which no questions are asked on spending it. It adds up reasonably fast too if you save for a few weeks. Then you can buy any addon you wish without reprisal

First of all , my advice would be, not to take advice....You will know what to do, and if i could give you one word, it would be..... "compromise", and if you or she cant....then walk......or in your case....fly.

I'm pretty amazed at how lucky some of you are -- especially if you have kids, I wouldn't have even considered spending any money on a hobby when the kids were little. In fact I sold my computer (Commodore 64) and TV when I got married, and I didn't even get to watch TV for 5 years. Still, that was more for the kids' sake.
I didn't really get back into tech until I was divorced, and living on my own again. So I have always assumed that for me it's wife or hobby, never both... Wife No. 2 was a bit more into technology, which was lucky, but I would have never have considered a simming computer unless I could 'sell' the idea of turning it into a business at some stage.

But at the end of the day after we pay the running costs of the home, the rest of my income is mine and the rest of her indoors income is hers. Why would one have to justify spending what you worked so damn hard for ie your pay.
