New Laptop

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby ScottyB » Mon Jul 11, 2011 12:10 pm

Looking to uprgrade my laptop around Xmas, as I currently have a Toshiba Satellite A500. It runs Fs9 at high specs very well (almost always), but not FSX.

How would this go with FSX on medium settings?

Or what Laptops can you recommend that would run it better? Looking to spend around $1,500.

Cheers

I recently brought a laptop , HP probook 4520 ( Intel i5 - ATI graphic card) , cost around 1300/1400 and runs FSX fine after tweaks .

Very well, I would think.
I love the Trademe-type specs -- CPU speed:6.9 GHz:) Do they still get away with that sort of thing?

I'm looking at upgrading my laptop for FSX this year too. The main compromise I see with this one you are looking at is the 512mb graphics card, these days I think 1gb dedicated is minimum for gaming, and of course the new generation Sandy Bridge processors

I was at Harvey Norman yesterday having a look and my pick was the Toshiba with a 2gb Dedicated graphics card and the i7 processor, (Sandy Bridge) for $1999.99

Shop around man have a good look, deals come and go every day. smile.gif

Trademe sellers tend to multiply the processor speed by the number of cores, which has no real bearing on reality.

No it is a 4 cores Clock speed 1.73 GHz, so the processor speed is 1.73 GHz

I think you would really need at least a 2.3GHz i5 cpu for FSX

How does this one look guys?

Apparently these Lenovo's are amazing - ranked only behind Apple's as the best laptops (by PC World).

Yeah I hear that the Acer's are very good?? A computer tecchie told me that today. What do you guys all think of them?

Are you meaning this one Kahu? http://www.bondandbond.co.nz/shop/computer...prod112532.html

It's the cheapest Acer I could find with i7. Although the hard drive is only 5400rpm, does that matter?

Thanks,
Scotty

HD speed will have an effect on operation , course most desktops are 7200 but you do get extra out off a 10200 surely the raptor type should fit into a laptop . As i said many time before a Laptop wont have the punch unless you spend bigger dollars , only reason i brought mine was to do outta house/away from AGN , wont do that due to screen restraints , maybe ok for painting , but depends on what you really want to use it for , and obviously u want it for flight training in a sense or least some feel for it or play with nav and beacons .

Yeah thats a bitt of a beasty laptop. Probably worth paying the extra over a i5 1GB graphics card. Just remember to use an usb external fan pad when using the laptop for exta cooling when playing fsx.

Okay I think I have decided on this one (but I have customized it for the better) after numerous hours of research:

http://dicksmith.co.nz/product/XC7840/tosh...50-02j-notebook

However i will buy it driect from Toshiba USA, which will save me a heap with the way the US$ is these days!

Specs are:

Intel i7-2630QM
2.0ghZ with Turbo Boost 2.9ghZ
8GB DDR3
500GB 7200RPM HD (have the option of a 640GB 5400RPM???)
NVIDIA GEForce GT540M 1GB GDDR3 memory

= $1159 NZD

How much for frieght do you think? (It states "FREE SHIPPING!" on the Toshiba site but I presmume that is only to the USA

You will need to allow for GST as well.
