The weather looked a bit challenging there Ian. You have to have a lot of spare time to fly this girl and with a leg that tracks downwind. I dont know how those guys ever flew them across the Tasman.
Every time I see a Caribou I think of this horrific footage of the one that took off with the control locks installed.
A very manoeuverable aircraft when handled correctly.

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

CP , they had one display at Omaka six or so years back , it headed down to Wigram after show developing engine problems , it was great to hear the engine run ups and to my pleasure winding the people up who brought housing on the then still open airbase .

My brother moved to Aussie a few years back and one of his first jobs was working on overhauling Caribou's. They do seem to be quite maintenance intensive. After having worked on heavy jets for close to 3 decades he found the change quite refreshing.....then he got nabbed by Boeing Australia.

We have our own "Wigram" up here with Hobsonville airbase. It is now just a few big marine factories with a massive housing complex going in sad.gif I can remember flying into Hobby many times when going to the Whenuapai airshow.
Why they have to use such a great resource as this for housing is really beyond me. But of course so many decisions involving the defence forces are beyond me too..LAV's (zillions of them that can't go anywhere without a ship), cessation of the strike force .....frigates....and that roll on roll off roll over transport ship.

You just need to crop out that top menu bar and your there ....well done, thumbup1.gif thumbup1.gif and a great choice of aircraft. I was lucky enough to have had a coulple of rides in the old things.

Be interesting to see how long people who buy onto Hobby to start complaining about the noise off the aircraft , Christchurch being the second largest city now destroyed by the EQ Bomb realistic dose require a secondary airfield , if it gets worst - really turns turnip , the EQs i mean , the old Caribou would be ideal for emergency EVAC

The HV development was planned on the understanding that NZWP would take civilian traffic.
Folks at HV won't get much aircraft noise but the guys on Herald Island made such a fuss during consultation that everyone gave up on the idea of a commercial airport at Whenuapai.
Here's an A320 80dB noise footprint I did at the time:

Sorry about the thread drift, we should start a new discussion on this perhaps?

I don,t think we need do that , like all the noise - airports , why do people buy within an airport area them complain about it , can,t see the logic .

Well...there hasn't been commercial traffic out of NZWP for 45 years, so you have to see their point somewhat.
Despite the 20% or so against (at a guess you'll find them inside that footprint), most people favour a commercial airport.
An opportunistic politician (subsequently disgraced), took up the cry and got voted in, sinking the initiative.
But it will come back for sure - at the moment the population is split 50/50 between Mangere and Whenuapai as a closest destination.
The trend is ever northward.
Soon there will be a million people demanding a local airport.

Same reason folks buy lifestyle blocks in rural dairying areas, then complain about animal noise and the cowshit on there SUV tires all the time. I can just imagine them in Afghanistan.... " Ummmmm excuse me but do you mind firing that RPG somewhere else.." sheesh how could the Taliban cope with that...
