One wheel landing

Just realised that I haven't reported back on what I choose for my prize form the October Screen Shot competition.

After much deliberation I decided on the A2A Acu-Sim module for the Spitfire. I've been most impressed with this, so much so that it may be replacing the Vulcan as my first choice aircraft!

The question on my mind was how do I show an add-on module for the Spitfire and then fate came to my aid. Flying low over the causeway between Pepin Island and the Mainland (SI) at Cable bay I inadvertently tapped the underside against the bar. Hardly any touch at all, but enough to lock up the right hand wheel. Tried recycling the landing gear a number of times then some violent manoeuvres but all to no avail. The right hand wheel stayed in the locked up position. Back to Nelson and had to try a landing on just the one wheel. The screen shots record my adventure . . . .





















Maybe I should consider one of these for this month's screen shot competition!

Chap .... surprised you did,nt kill yourself trying that .... i would have put on the grass , hope Betty and Sally at Supermarine can put that mess back together again biggrin.gif

I was figuring that it could dig into the grass and then flip - an almost certain kill - maybe I should have landed on the grass with both wheels up? You notice I had the canopy open ready for a quick exit if necessary.

Greg , your so much like a Spitfire Pilot , You should ask Sir Tim or Mister Doug Booker for best approach biggrin.gif , then we get Jean and Alison to fix the Spitty for ya smile.gif

Love the #3 shot, and what a good way to show Accusim!
Doesn't the Spit have a hand crank to get the leg down? or did you bend it enough so it's truly broke.

Thanks Charl, I appreciate that! Yes it does have the hand crank and I was going to use it but started thinking about a one wheel landing approach and the photo opportunity and so didn't get around to trying that out. I wouldn't have lasted long in a real Spit with that sort of forgetfulness would I . . .

An excellent scenario. Don't suppose you could retract the one down - would have made for less of a rudder/aileron thing. Next time use the grass - a little more forgiving to metal parts. My past experience has shown that if the runway/landing area's long enough, commit to landing on the first attempt and try to stop the prop before touchdown. Don't know about a 12 cylinder Merlin but a four banger Lycoming stops easily. A prop strike, under power, virtually trashes your engine - rod and crank bearings for sure. By the way, your first shot reveals the quality of the model you chose.

Some good suggestions Mr Olderndirt. I wonder if I can get this to happen again so I can try them out. I do like the idea of stopping the prop too. Thanks for the feedback, it's quite encouraging smile.gif

OnD has the right idea, kill the mags and mixture on a high final... If the blades aren't horizontal (2 blade) give the starter button a flick to wind them around winkyy.gif
Good screens too - nice to see some of the "oh ****!" moments.

You guys have definitely made some good suggestions. I'm certainly going to try to cause the same fault, and, if successful, will save the flight so I can practise trying these ideas out.

These moments do add to the excitement of the FSX experience - I think that's part of the reason why I'm enjoying the Accu-Sim experience so much. cool.gif

Managed to do a partial repeat, this time cut the engine and remembered to keep the stick back after touch down and wheel collapse. The prop has survived and the is no engine damage (check hanger report below) - also looks much more survivable this time . . .

A trip to the hanger confirms the obvious, and once again the boys toil all night to get me ready for the next day.

The A2A spitty is a fantastic model. My young fella saved his pocket money and bought it. Of course I get to fly it too .... well on the rare occasions I can get on to the desktop PC !!!
