Overclocking question

Hi all
I have a dual core pentium 3.4 and have being using the preset overclocking function on my asus P5QPL am motherboard, and set it to 10%. When checking the system properties one of the cpu are at 3.40 and the other 3.74. Should both cpu show 3.74?
Other thing I set the overclock to 15 % but the computer would only boot to the first window start up and then a blue screen with some info then the computer would shut down?

In all honesty you shouldn't be Overclocking at all, its likely you are really damaging your system.

I suggest youtubein it and google will get you the best and mostly correct answers normally ,pretty much you will need good cooling unit on the CPU and then turn the clockin up slowly till you find the sweet spot ,if your pc on its final months year tops go for it just remember of course if it goes pear shape ,well most ppl would tell you i told you so etc ..

The asus easy overclocking you are talking about neaver works. Never has for me. Same result as you. And no, overclocking your cpu will not damage it if done correctly. Higher overclock settings will require a better cooler. You should use a free programme called "Realtemp" so you can monitor core temps from within windows. Underload anything up to 65deg will be fine. They can handle more heat but that gives a good safety margine. You are best to alter the bios settings your self. Somtimes higher overclocks are more stable than lower settings. You just have to find that sweet spot buy gradualy increasing the settings in the bios. It is a different approach with different type cpu's so do a bit of research. You will learn a lot on this journey. Dont be afraid.

Hi Andrew it is weird that only one cpu is showing an increase at 10%, at 15 % the computer wont boot passed the first XP window so I have gone back to the factory setting.

When you say that, I assume your talking about the bit where it says "Pentium dual core 3.4 @ 3.7"?
The first number means the frequency at stock speed, the second number is the frequency that the CPU is operating at.

Also Andrew is right, you really shouldn't use software to overclock, its best to use the BIOS.

Yes thanks for the heads up I thought that both should be the same thanks for clearing that up, unable to get in above 15% not sure whats wrong there

Nothing is wrong. Its the auto overclock you are using that is wrong. As i said I had the same issue in my early overclocking days. Just forget it. Just manually increase your base clock or multiplier (depending what cpu type you have) in small increments. The default auto cpu voltage will be fine for moderate overclocking and make sure the ram is not locked to the cpu speed. You want that to remain standard. Clocking ram will just lead to trouble.

Thanks Andrew, using the auto clocking and got it to 10 %. I would like to try 14% but not sure how to manual adjust the settings
