Yes i have acceleration installed which installs sp1 and sp2.I found it was in some areas that the sim would hang.
By removing those files i was ok and i still had plenty dense autogen.

one of the options i tested earlier included unticking all 3 options on left side of the vlc configurator, which i assume reduces the amount of the 3 groups of scenery files. my ctds persisted even after the autogen texture option was unticked. does this have any bearing on your 'autogen overload' comment?

Oops, missed this.

No, the issue here is only with Vector Land Class active, which uses the custom forest landclass textures, and matching autogen. These autogen files are super-dense, and I think that this may be overloading some systems. By thinning out these particular files, it may stop some systems from choking. That isn't to say that this is your problem, but if you did want to test a reduced autogen version, then let me know.

thanks for the reply. i fly regularly with ftx orbx aaaustralia and the various ftx north america sceneries installed; all of these are pretty heavy with autogen and my system is able to handle them. when i fly in the ftx regions, i have a group of adjusted scenery-specific autogen densities (trees and houses) which are switched in and out in the fsx.cfg [terrain] section. i am not sure if this procedure is analogous to what you mean by a "reduced autogen version".

i would have thought that, if autogen overload is involved here, the problem would be more widespread over the new zealand coverage area. although the hangups and crashes are not exclusively limited to specific geographical areas, they are not quite a specific as i originally reported. i fear that i am already well beyond my level of comprehension and competence, if you think autogen overload may be the culprit, i am willing to test a reduced autogen version. anything to avoid having to give up vector landclass!

i can see that you will be having a lot of things to do over the next few weeks or months, related to the orbx ftx south island scenery. perhaps my problem with fsx regularly hanging up when vlc is enabled has dropped to a low priority on your to-do list, but i was still hoping to be able to use the vector landclass scenery and/or some of the vlc-compatible air fields either alone or in conjunction with the orbx south island scenery. however, i cannot use the vlc files if my sim crashes regularly. your last response sounded as if you had some thoughts about a trial of vlc with reduced autogen. i wondered if you were still considering this or any other thoughts about fixing or circumventing my difficulties. any thoughts or comments will be gratefully appreciated.

Yes, although this was more aimed at Roy, who mentioned that removing some of the autogen fixed his problems. I do need to arrive at a suitable autogen density, but this needs some serious research and experimentation.

It really comes down to the way in which the different autogen settings interact -- one thing I don't want to do is to reduce the autogen level just to allow people to run autogen at full density, when pulling back a notch give the same result. If there is a 'sweet spot' for autogen, I'll find it, but it does take time.

thanks for the prompt reply. i did not mean to sound impatient. i will be happy to wait for any suggestions or fixes you can devise.

Hi Steve, I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. It nearly drove me to ringing the white coats to come and pick me up, and I certainly had a few drinks trying to solve it. Do you run FSUIPC4? If you do not, no need to read any further. My fix was quite simple.

With having had so many ctd's, (if you have not already done so) it is worrh the minute or so to checking in your Controls joystick assignments to see if FSX has reassigned any of the the joystick functions! If you have any functions duplicated in FSUIPC and FSX assignments all hell can break loose.

Cheers
Warren.

warren:

thanks for the suggestion about fsuipc. i have not looked into this as it seems unlikely that only flights over new zealand would be affected.

it seems as though, for the moment, there are no other sugestions for fixing my problem. i have made a number of flights around north island with vlc disabled, and have encountered no hanging or crashes to desktop. so i have reluctantly decided to temporarily give up vlc and try the orbx south island scenery. perhaps at some time in the future, there will be some suggestions for using both vlc and orbx in some sort of complementary way, and i can reinstall the vlc for another try. i also will test individual airfields from the vlc compatible sceneries and see if they offer improvements over the orbx ones. and i shall continue to return hopefully to the nz forums.

thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.
