Any GTX580 users out there?

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Adamski » Sun Jan 22, 2012 4:55 pm

I'd be keen to hear comments from other GTX580 users about their experience with nVidia's FSAA working in FSX. I know of one other user (BobL) that has exactly the same problem.

Basically, I can't persuade either the nVidia CP or nVidia Inspector to apply anything more than basic anti-aliasing. I've tried every combination ... deleted/created new profiles, you name it. Tried every Google thread I could find. No luck. Latest nVidia drivers, BTW.

What appears to happen is that the *edges* of aircraft (and other FSX objects) appear to be blurring nicely ... but only at what appears to be 2x. Changing AA settings seems not to alter the level/quality of this blurring in any way.

What's worse, this AA is not being applied to the *inside* of objects (like aircraft) until you zoom in significantly, so screenshots of HD aircraft when you're not fully zoomed in look pretty bad. This isn't to do with the textures themselves (as they're really detailed when you zoom in) ... just the way nVidia is treating them. My guess is that it's trying to keep menus etc. crisp and only applying AA under certain conditions.

My old ATI card was much better at this, applying various levels of AA *globally*, across the whole screen - regardless of whether it was an edge of an object or not. In other words, it was true FSAA, whereas my nVidia card simply is not.

The GTX580 seems to work slightly better in other games ... it just won't play ball with FSX.

BTW - I've tried FXAA and that works OK (ie, it applies FSAA across the whole screen properly), but I'm not that impressed by the quality of the AA.

Any ideas, anyone?

No issues what so ever..

Untick AA in FSX set up FSAA in Inspector as per image... done. I dont use pre FSAA now as I am happy with the post FXAA and my texture filtering settings.

{EDIT} Sorry Adam forgot to mention, run Inspector as Admin. And once set NEVER ever go back into the NVidia cpl to play with game settings for FSX or any other game, set all other games with inspector as well. If you go back into NV panel and save setting there everything will go back to what NV & FSX considers safe defaults.

Aaah, RD if only you knew how grateful I am for your post!!! IT WORKS!!!!! thumbup1.gif cool.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif clapping.gif notworthy.gif

I think the single one thing that could have been the culprit was me jumping in and out of the nVidia CP (as well) ... not good!

A few points though (maybe for the benefit of others):

1) I have UAC turned off, so no need to "run as Admin".

2) Even if I have Inspector set to "over-ride application settings", I can't get it to work in FSX unless I tick the AA box. I've already Googled this a few times, and some people say that FSX applies some initial/basic AA settings then your video card supplies the rest. In effect, I think my system is treating "over-ride" as "enhance", for some reason. Can't seem to be able to cure that, so the tick stays on for the moment blink.gif.

3) Some of the drop-downs I have don't quite match what you've shown, though I also have NI 1.9.5.9 and GF 285.62 - but no matter. I'm going to try some variations of other settings (including the built in FPS limiter) to see if any of those may have been kicking my old attempts into touch. At least I have a profile now that I know works that I can come back to.

The difference is incredible. Even though I always had minimal AA, the detail that now renders properly across the whole screen is amazing. Even my PMDG 737NGX VC instrumentation is quite legible. Yay! I'll put up a screenie to show it off ... and maybe pull out one of my old "before" shots to compare.

Thanks!

Just to show what my problem was:

Here you can see the edges of the 737 are anti-aliased (more obvious on other zoom levels) but the "inner" part of the aircraft isn't ...

This is with your corrections - with FSAA working across the whole image. Notice particularly the yellow/black "chequerboard" pattern on the wing root.

This is a new shot. In the past, those multi stripes interfered terribly.

Har har ... he needs to clock up a bit more overtime to top up his credit card laugh.gif

I've bought many of the jetliners over the years - CLS, Captain Sim, Wilco, iFly ... you name it. The NGX beats them all by a factor of about 10. I'm even thinking of trying the PMDG 747, but it's *old* now.

I agree! Living not too far from Whenuapai, I get to see the RNZAF 757 flying low quite often (as well as my beloved Hercs). The 757 has very sleek lines, IMHO, compared to the "fat" 737's ... the 767's and 777's are just too big all round laugh.gif

The reason it’s taken so long to reply is been doing 15 -18 hour days this week – what it b1tch it is to be on salary……. sad.gif

Just have to find some time to spark up FSX to get some shots, I haven't even turned it on this week, ummm options are sleep or FSX after work - thats a hard call unsure.gif

It's quite frightening, that wing flex - isn't it? I'd hate to be seeing that out of *my* window laugh.gif

Messing about doing the screenshots, I was surprised at how ugly the 747 actually is (comparatively speaking)! I've always wanted one though, so I'm delighted. I'm a bit of a procedures nerd and inveterate knob twiddler, so this should keep me happy for a while!

Ive always had a soft spot for the 747 from the time i climbed the stairs at Christchurch in 1980 , QANTAS 'City of Canberra' the flight across the Tassy , in cockpit .. man that engineer was busy by compare to the other two , and looking back over the Cap's shoulder , Yes you can see an engine , wing flex , hardly noticed in cruise . smile.gif
