Carier OPs Tutorial

A forum specifically to discuss the latest and greatest of all flight simulators

Postby dart15 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 11:13 am

It's fair to say that I have "played" with FS ever since its first iteration but have never been completely "immersed" in it. Until several years ago I could rejoice in the fact that, like some others here, most weekends saw me embracing the "burning blue" in all its glorious reality. But I digress… There are two aspects of FSX that I have never become properly acquainted with – a situation which a forced reinstall and the addition of Acceleration has encouraged me to rectify. These are Multi-player and Carrier Ops. Hopefully, once the rudiments have been sufficiently grasped, I can participate in both together smile.gif

I have long been a fan of Flying Stations – or at least as much of a "fan" as you can be without actually installing many of their fleet and types! Installing Acceleration has finally rectified that and yesterday I installed Ark Royal (with Victorious to follow). I then thought, "What do I do now?" And not knowing the answer, I consulted the World According to Google winkyy.gif – and it's the item that I then discovered that I want to share with those who may be looking for a (IMHO) good tutorial on carrier ops. It helps that the author is rather easy on the eye too and an aviatrix herself (I said AVIatrix!) winkyy.gif Check it out for yourself…

http://nikkiwaif.tripod.com/index.html

Apologies if this has been well documented before but when I stumble upon a good resource I like to spread the joy….

Follow up on this , good learning curve is the install off Bruce Fitzgerald,s CV-6 , ideal for multiplay , all have to install the Carrier and in MP one has to be in charge , captain of the ship . altho this takes one away from the flying it make for a very interesting on board tutor almost having one as the batman to call go round and clear deck .

I have done this many time before operating with a total 6 MP players course myself took the captaincy , i called the shots for recovery and launch , the nice thing about this carrier op was operating just off shore off New Zealand , many have the WWII carrier aircraft , the Swordfish is idea for you first catch , only glitch is its an American carrier .

FSX CV-6 USS Enterprise. Aircraft carrier features hardened flight deck and hangar deck; operational arrestor cables (Acceleration users); air boss camera view for watching deck operations; stable water dynamics / top speed in the low 30's; custom wake effect; night textures. By Bruce Fitzgerald.

I'd have to d/load and reinstall the Carrier and Swordfish , go for a try this later this afternoon , do you have Team Speak installed , this makes it more realistic with comm,s between carrier and incoming aircraft .

I currently have the Avenger , Corsair , Hellcat , Dauntless installed so that opens it up for any other who may want to join in with those types .

Negative on the Team Speak at this time. I'm still coming to terms with unexpectedlly losing my previous SSD and all that it held sad.gif RL probably means I wont have an opportunity to advance things much until the weekend - but I'll send you a PM when I get to the point where I think I have everything necessary intalled and I'm at the point where I can give this a lash! BTW what TS channel do you use?

We have a NZFF channel , address ... atl01.bargainvoice.com:7890 , and we use the Gamespy server for the multiplays

Some carrierops stuff here:

Ok for CarrierOps in FSX some points have to be made:
1/ When FSX acceleration was released there were parts missing which included the lack of ILS for Carrier, lack of MP missions.
2/ The default Carriers conduct a weekly tour from port to port but this is not visible in mp, also there are static carriers as well.

So 1st off we need the following to get the most out of carrierops
1/ Javiers Carrier pack "USS Nimitz IKE version2
-The reason why is that this is the most detailed carrier and is complete with working catapults, elevator and other scenery.
2/ AICARRIERS 2
-This mod allows you to spawn a Carrier or a Carrier Battle group anywhere at any time and you can command it to move as well.
3/ Java version
Java JRE 1.5 or upper (get free at http://java.sun.com)
-The reason why is that the newer versions of Java cause a conflict its not a big deal to uninstall Java and install the right version to get it to work. This is important for AICARRIERS which also important for the MP missions for carrierops.
4/ SFCARRIER2.5 mission
-This is required in order to do conduct MP Carrierops. Because FSX acceleration never came with a MP mission for carrierops a telented person had to make this mission so that Virtual Squadrons could conduct CarrierOps in mp.

As well as that you also need the ILS file to have ILS for the Carrier. I know it sounds alot but the benefits are quite good aircraft that are good for carrierops include Dinos latest Goshawk, FSX acceleration F/A-18A and the VRS Superhornet.

Where to get the mods.
1/ Java can be downloaded from the above link I posted.
2/ AICARRIERS2
http://www.fsxaddons.com/files/ai-carri ... e7012a9728
3/ Javiers Carrier pack
http://cvw7.com/download.php?view.46

BTW vLSO is awesome it gives a real good devrief for each approach.

With SFCARRIERS there is also a platcam so in mp you can have a real LSO if you can find one. To refuel you have to go down the elevator.

You can get some of the other mods from here:

http://simviation.com/

For payware the Superhornet can be bought from here:

http://www.vrsimulations.com/tacpack.htm

For vLSO it supports the following aircraft:

Following aircraft now fully supported:
•F/A-18A Hornet (both Acceleration and Sludge)
•F/A-18E Rhino (VRS)
•F-14D Tomcat (Dino Cattaneo)
•T-45C Goshawk (Dino Cattaneo)
•A-4K Skyhawk KAHU

And some can also be found from here:

I have found the flying stations Westland Wyvern a fun aeroplane to fly on and off carrier decks, it can be a little finicky landing due to the slow spoolup speed of the Python turboprop, but its stable, with everything out..
it can be found here http://flyingstations.com/wyvern.html and there are some very cool paint kits out there with some very cool fictional repaints including an RNZAF paint scheme

Well, I've had a ball this weekend!!

Before I read Subs excellent and informative post I'd managed to find and d/l most of the software he has referred to - the exception being the app required for mp carrier ops which I had not seen mention of in the tutorial that started this thread.

So.... I managed to write a .cfg file to allow me to position Ark Royal (Nimmitz is for girls tongue.gif ) and a couple of Escorts off the extended centre-line of runway 02 NZCH steaming in a nor easterly direction and had a great time trapping (mostly winkyy.gif ) the new Flying Stations Buccaneer S1 (includes working surface radar, air to air refuelling etc etc) and the latest version of the freeware T45 (what a superb model that is!!!). I must say, although I like the Buccaneer and its challenges very much, there is a marked contrast between it (for which I paid US$15) and the freeware T45. But I really am a fan of FAA types.

Ian, I also installed TS3 but that channel you supplied didnt look right? Seems to be a Brazilian host? The forum MP instructions mention the inspire server but not a port # ???

I have a few more types to d/l (and the mp apps Subs has referred to) but should be up to speed soon and looking forward to a mp session smile.gif. I haven't reinstalled them yet but does anyone know if the old Iris F4K will work with these carriers/Acceleration? I'm VFR at present so the ILS stuff can wait....

Yes, agreed - the Gannets from the same source are good too - heaps of power from the mighty Double Mamba but still subject to the same inherrent delay. Amazing - 9 tonnes and stalls at 85 knots with everything hanging out!

Hanging out and hanging off ... I was caught up the side of one at Nowra .. well had the ropes moved cleaning it .... same thing happened two years previous with the Wessex , that was the same day of the A4 crash , that stage did not no what had happen and reason that was left open ...

Have done a fair bit of carrier flying fairly recently in everything ranging from the Flying stations Swordfish, Gannet and Wyvern, to Dino's Skyhawk & Tomcat.

For those who have the Flying Stations Ark Royal & Victorious I can post up the code of my .cfg which enables them both to be used as AICarriers, Still experimenting at the moment but so far have managed to get the Ark Royal in formation with a few of the other ships that the program comes with
PC Spec's: Deep Cool Tesseract case, Asrock B450-pro4 motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 2600x, 32GB DDR4 3000mhz, Gigabyte RTX 2060 v2 OC 6GB, 2x2TB Seagate, 1x 3TB Seagate drives

Some points the MP has to be done with a mission, the above link I posted earlier in this thread is MP Carrierops that has a moving carrier in mp with ILS and when using vLSO is quite close to the real deal. A guy on the FSDT forum after flying FSX in carrierops managed to land on a carrier in a real Superhornet sim. And also at night which is quite difficult to do and he got rated not the wave off which is quite an achievement. The MP mission was made by Orion on the FSDT forum who used the racing template to make it. Im sure if you ask him he might make an ark royal one for you guys which probably would not take much to implement. BTW the carrier I use is very detailed and that is why the MP mission is designed to use that carrier since it has everything nearly modeled. You can walk below deck it even has a coke machine and there is one ground crew animation for when you hook up to the cat.

This is the approach (groove) for landing on the carrier.

Refuelling can be done below decks.

It was paused due to the analysing of the Superhornets corner speed in a dogfight with the hornet. BTW you can get a good mod called the Sludge hornet which features a meatball gauge which is useful as it is an enlarged view like in Janes F/A-18E.
