Tauranga Air Show - the alternative pics!

A separate section for photographers to upload and comment on everything from amateur plane spotting images to professional air to air shots.

I really don't want to spoil Gavin's amazing pictures by posting my efforts in his thread. After deleting 400 out of focus, badly lit, or horrendously cropped pics I ended up with a mere handful. These are the best I could do.

I know they're not *that* bad, but they really don't do justice to the show (I went on Saturday). As before, it was incredibly well organised - both on the ground and in the air. There was hardly a second when something wasn't happening - and very little overlap. What a wealth of warbirds!!! - and they weren't miserly with their displays either - going up more than once, the last time for an all-in mock battle which sounds corny, but was very effective. Noise, explosions - and warplanes whizzing everywhere. Seeing a Spit or P-40 alone in a clear blue sky is one thing, but seeing it streak through smoke, ack-ack effects and general clatter was another thing altogether. Wonderfully co-ordinated and a tribute to all - even the Axis/Allies fighting it out on the ground!

The jets were superb as well. All the popular regulars, but this time graced by a superb Hunter. We all became schoolboys again. Always appreciated, the Harvard team was a marvelous sight ... the Yaks ... and even three Stearmans - not to mention the heart-stopping Pitts/Extra displays.

We really are blessed in NZ to have so many opportunities to see real warbirds perform for us. Their flying hours must be so limited. We ought to cherish every moment.

So much easier when they're on the ground ... and not moving very fast!

The notorious ZK-CAG "Currawong"

Doug Brooker's 2-seat fly-about

Brendon's!

Finally - I can't let this post go without my old favourite!

Adam I'll pay you the best compliment I can by saying I wish I'd taken your #9 inverted Spitfire shot... just lovely.

I mostly took video on this outing, so hopefully will have something before the end of 2012!

They let us play with the old lady before departure from Ardmore, so did pluck a few stills:

She's been very nicely tarted up.
But nothing can change the lumpiness of a Dakota flight at 3000 ft ...

Thanks, Charl. I must admit, that inverted shot seems to capture the pure grace and poetry of the Spitfire more than any of the other pics. It was a lucky "click" as so many of my other pics we ruined by my inability to conquer the camera. I really must RTFM!

Did you fly down in the Dak? What a treat. BobL and I went down to Ohakea in it a year or two back and have hardly stopped smiling since! We're hoping to repeat the adventure, but it's hopelessly over-subscribed, with only so many seats.

In a strange way the Spit "got" to me at this airshow.
Might have been the same flypast as your #8, Adam, a second or two earlier perhaps, I got goose-flesh about this lone craft returning to its base in the face of enormous adversity blah blah blah.
There was a momentary hush over the airfield too, so you heard the exhaust note, it barks a particular way at just such a point in the flypast.
Fabulous.

Did you fly down in the Dak?[/quote]Yes I love flying in to an airshow, so on the spur of the moment took a chance with the Dak and got aboard.
it also solves the parking issue winkyy.gif and you get to go close and personal with stuff on the airside.
I was surprised they parked the Hunter so far from the crowd at Tauranga, so was lucky they parked the Dak next to it for the return flight.

Haha, certainly not at the expense of the favourites: Spitfire/Corsair/Mustang thank you!
But the P-40s gave I thought a very smooth display, splendid on a low fast run in.
Loved the Long-Eze... except they've ruined my only NZ repaint of it, by putting a jet in its tail!
(Aside: if you look in the linked thread, the scenery was exactly what we saw on the coast/west approach, right down to the cruise ship!)

Nice series Paul, smart to leave the prop sticking into the corner of the Hunter pass, gives reference.
What's that little black high-winger, MLT?
Very tidy and quiet performer, Rotax engine.

And, weren't the RC models great?
Displaying in their slot, just like their bigger brethren,
I knew we'd see a Macchi sooner or later...

Nice shots guys, you've managed to capture the feel of the day - what a great line-up of stuff.

A 747 skipper I was talking to me told me that the Long EZ jet, was powered by drone engines, bought cheaply and good for about 50 hours before
binning.....anyway it's a good stroy..?

Naki, those shots are simply *awesome*! thumbup1.gif

Now - I'm going to have to ask the inevitable "a bad workman blames his tools" question ... what sort of camera/lens are you using? They're not just slightly better than mine (Canon EOS 450D) ... they're in another league altogether! They're everything I see in my mind's eye when I press that shutter .... but I get ... hmmm ... well, you can see!

It appears Sunday must have had a substantially different running order. On the Saturday, there were no Chipmunks (which I dearly love), no Cri-Cri (which is a hoot!) and no funny white jet with the canards (whatever *that* is!). I think you appear to have scored better in the clouds department (we didn't see any!) ... so more dramatic backdrops. Sour grapes??? laugh.gif

Did the Trojan fly? It didn't on Saturday.

Your Hunter pics are tremendous. The thing just went too fast for my panning skills (lack of). I had to laugh, when I overheard someone's girlfriend near me say "I wish they'd stay still when I try to take a picture!". I have that T-shirt sad.gif

As to that lime green (dare not mention the brand) repaint. I have to admit we had to buy that drink on the way home - just to see in close-up how hideous it really is (it *is*). I have a very strong/defined opinion about this senseless, tasteless branding that seems to be becoming universal. I really don't care for the argument that things just wouldn't happen without this form of sponsorship. They did, and have done (for generations) ... but this really isn't the place!

Fantastic pics, Naki ... oooooh such a treat! smile.gif

Will convert you to P-40s yet!....part of the reason I like them so much (part from very nice aircaft to fly) is that they are very siginificant aircraft in the RNZAF service (the P-40E needs to be in RNZAF colours!) and are resposnbile for shooting down nearly 100 aircraft in NZ service

Was going to edit the props out but in the end left it in...

MLT is a Just Highlander

Yes the Vampire and Macchi were great...pity the Hawk didnt fly

You might be right about the LongEze jet ....I heard it only has 15 minutes endurance!

Thanks man! Wasn't going post some pictures but got myself in such a muddle with Photobucket I just posted all of them that I uploaded.

My camera is a Nikon D3000 with 55-200mm lense...I could do with a bigger zoom but pretty happy with the result anyway....hit and miss with panning but getting there (deleted quite a few pics). Your pics look great if I view them on my IPhone but grainy on the PC...so maybe your pics come out like they are with the Upload or whre you have uploaded to?

The Chipmunks didnt fly (they were parked around the back) nor did the T-28

I rushed it a bit when I created the 1280px copies. Didn't really de-noise them first - then applied some sharpening to the whole image, rather than isolating just the aircraft. I don't think Photobucket is messing with the quality of the uploaded pics (so I can't blame it on that, winkyy.gif).

Comparing the specs, our two cameras are pretty similar - so it's down to the photographer, not the camera! blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif ... back to school, Adam laugh.gif

Shame the Chippies didn't fly (but then at least I didn't miss them!). A Chipmunk was the first plane I ever left the ground in!

Looks like both days were very successful - and a credit to the pilots, the organisers, and the army of helpers.
