OK - while ever you do not put the downloaded one in the correct place your original remains in place, intact and operating. When you get time, go to your original cfg, make your own copy in a place you will remember and then place the newly downloaded file where your original was. No need to hurry. Should the new cfg be satisfactory you may just replace it with your original, or better still read all the notes that venetobu provides and start modifying your newly downloaded cfg to suit your hardware.
I have been using the Venetobu cfg's for about six different builds and have found them to be a huge improvement on performance, but some hardware needs different settings than others. For example, should you get blue or dark flashes it may be a good idea to experiment with changing the 'bufferpools' tweak - I have been able to eliminate stuttering as well by experimenting.
Should you get the bit between your teeth and have a nvidia card you may like to download the latest 'nvidia inspector ' (free) which is the easiest way known to externally limit the frame rate to say 60 fps which allows the card to perform better without limiting the frame rate in game.

The actual file is %AppData%\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg, so if you just copy part of it, it won't work.
