An effort to collaborate all freeware New Zealand scenery addons. Discuss the creation and management of the project here.

This is really looking good. It'll be great to have a quality Christchurch again as I really miss the Godzone scenery (and Cathedral Square) I had in FS9. A mammoth task, but you're ahead of the game Ian. Christchurch Council should take a leaf out of your book! laugh.gif

Cheers,

It would certainly be a worthwhile project having another photoreal Christchurch. Just for old-time's sake I loaded up the Cathedral Square scenery in FSX, and 'dropped in' for a look. Still hits me hard thinking about the condition of these buildings now, tomorrow is the last chance for locals to see the Cathedral before it comes down.

I don't see why not. I'll track down the original models and re-export for FSX.

I know. The Cathedral was one of the very first sights I saw in the South Island and that original visit to Christchurch was an amazing experience (I've been back once since, the year before the first quake). My heart is very heavy to think of the CBD now and especially that the Cathedral is about to come down. A very sad day but hopefully in years to come a great city will rise in its place.

On a happier note, thinking back it was that visit to Christchurch which kicked off my long association with NZ simming. I'd just come back from the trip and installed an old copy of FS2000 a friend had given me. Looking to see whether there was any custom NZ scenery, one of the first things I found was your site Rob, showcasing the then new Cathedral Square scenery. I was astounded, bought FS2002 and the Godzone subscription and the rest is history. So that Square scenery has quite a significance for me. I always preferred your photoreal version to the others available, too.

I agree, there's a great case for a "historical" Christchurch scenery based on the pre-quake photoreal. We can then have Cathedral Square and a still operational Wigram, plus Ian's fantastic autogen and the airport with the new tower and terminal. I still run FS9 with all of my custom addons so can fly the area in that, but it's becoming a bit of a burden to maintain as I fly FSX and P3D almost exclusively now. I also moved your Cathedral Square into FSX and was really impressed with how well it held up given it was built for FS2002. It was only the positioning that was slightly off with VLC. It'll be great to have FSX versions of the models, thanks very much for your work.

Cheers,

Ade

That is the good part stepping back , least we reopen Wigram , Gavin 'Kahu' is working on it for this scenery , course with Rob going to re-position and convert the Old to new ... mentioned its going to be many many years before we see anything that may look like a CBD , plenty carparking spots now , makes and puts the traffic wardens outta work biggrin.gif

Thanks for the heads up about your updated autogen, Ian. I installed it and took a CT4 up for a spin earlier and the whole area looks stunning. Top work! clapping.gif

Once the airports are in place and Rob reinstates Cathedral Square, it'll be way ahead of any FS9 version.

Great stuff!

It's looking good but one thing I would like to see as a higher resolution photo background. What's the likelihood of being able to find something like that to go with all the nice work that Ian's done?

I do, thats why I download the airport region (Near 1.GB) and I might put it away for a rainy day(week/month/year) project.

You can download it in chunks, but there are a lot of issues, which rule it out for me. Although the freeware NZCH I'm working on uses this, but only covers the airport. (The photo doesn't go any further north-west than the airport.)

Main concerns are:
The quality -- it is high resolution, but it was put together in a real hurry, and has numerous alignments problems.
The clouds, as pointed out earlier.
The earthquake damage -- as this was taken within days of the big earthquake, it shows a very damaged city. I've talked this over with a lot of people who have shown an interest, but there's no way I'd want to show any of the damage, especially areas where people were killed or injured. When you look at it close-up, in parts it is just devastation, not only fallen buildings but flooding and liquefaction out east.
