If I can throw in my 2c worth here ...

Initially, I went for creating banners - and tended to crop my entries to a banner shape as well. However - thousands of screenshots later, I came to the conclusion that it's primarily a screenshot competition - and that people vote for the most attractive pic - regardless of whether it'd make a good banner.

Part of the fun of the competition is to give Uncle Doug an impossible pic to crop laugh.gif

I certainly crop off any useless crud from the image, but sometimes the same image can work well in both shapes and it's a shame to lose that original stuff at top and bottom.

Now now Adam don't go giving entrants any of those censored2.gif poo.gif ideas like that or I will be giving the image back to the winner and telling them crop it to 1200px by 350px and send it back to me and that is what they will get as the banner tongue.gif laugh.gif

I often find that cropping the useless crud doesn't leave much smile.gif.

In addition to the prize and the banner the winner will now have a splash screen image done of their winning image.

Adam (Adamski) will be doing these splash screens of the winning image each month and they will be posted in the congratulations post after the winners banner goes up.
Members may be asked for a copy of their original image so it can be cropped to the right size for the banner and also for the splash screen image see here

Don't aim to shoe-horn your pic into both formats (the banner and splash pic are a totally different shape). The *banner* is the main priority (if you don't get the banner you wont get the splash screen). Either way, please keep a high-resolution (un-cropped) version for use for both images.

Just to stress - the splash pic is *secondary* ... so don't compose/crop your pic specifically for the [more] square shape.

On another note ... I entered a comp at ORBX (NZSI screenshots) ... and you can't change your entry once you've posted it. We have a BIG advantage over ORBX in that we can change our entries at any time - right up to 1 hour before the close of play. Sometimes, the competition "hots up" towards the end - and that pic that looked great for so long, suddenly looks a bit "ordinary". I always have a hard time deciding on my pic(s), so it's really great to be able to swap at any time.
