USD 150 000 simulator

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby happytraveller » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:26 am

Saw this story on the net about an air traffic controller who has spent an estimated USD 150 000 building a 737 simulator, using lots of real parts. Strange thing is that despite spending such a lot of money, that it is a static simulator. I think that I would have preferred non real parts but a full motion sim.

Hate to think how much I have spent on hardware plus software, better not to know !!

smooth landings.

That is very COOL .. along the same line and thought as Flight Experience , many have grabbed old disused aircraft cockpits and built on them , Big boys Toys .. SO TRUE ! smile.gif

That would be the ultimate... but what happens if you wanted to take a C152 for a practice flight before an exam... you'd feel be a bit out of place sitting in that - where's the Carb heat???.
Takeoff's are optional. Landings are mandatory.

That's where a full holographic suite would come in handy - recreate whatever aircraft / scenery you want. Might make Rob's job a little more complex... laugh.gif Rumour has it that the "Star Trek" type of tech has actually been invented, but I'd wager none of us will get our hands on it inside the next 20 years. sad.gif I remember hearing about prototypes of full holographic TVs in the early '80s - they seemed to quietly disappear into the background as if they'd never been... que twilight zone musical score. tongue.gif

ohmy.gif You really don't no winkyy.gif ... he probably has a whole fleet of cessna's ... we all spend moneys .. over the years the chaps project is measured but not by build cost .. example , my Battleship may only be worth 300/400 NZ dollars in materials .. a lot is re-cycled material - but to sell it .. maybe , well won't go below 10G to sell it ... at least .. i would have 3 books alone that will touch the thousand mark put together ... its not the measure of cost but dedication to your own modelling skills .... Hey ... I have a 9ft Space Shuttle .. it can be pulled apart , shows the living quarters and ideal for a school education tool .. now i wonder what that would cost ? or what i could sell it for? unsure.gif

You must be a fanatic 737 supporter to go to that extreme. Beware, soon there will be some cheap 787 parts coming to your local junkyard. "It's Boeing if it ain't going" (Quote: Airbus)

Don't sit on that Shuttle model too long. Give a few years on with the way education is going and some kids will stare at you, asking: "What is a Space Shuttle ?" No kidding, happened to me with a 13 year old girl when I pointed out the ISS passing straight over us one night. "What is a Space Station ?"

I always feel desperately sorry for poor Wives (and their children) who have to put up with a fruit-case husband who spends/wastes that sort of money on a stupid? hobby!.... sad.gif ...!

My next-doors neighbour's wife has just kicked him out of their house for spending vast sums of money, over many years, in his stupid/annoying hobbies!

Little boys and their silly, expensive toys!... angry.gif ...!

Beware!

I like your gear, obviously setting up for FSX must take a while but I'm sure you get plenty of time to plan your next move during game play - probably have 5 or 10 minutes to think things over before you apply the next increment of bank . . . . .

Actually you must be talented too in order to get it to run on this gear laugh.gif

We Zilog Z80, 8-bit programmers are a rare breed now, but still confined to our bedrooms, busy loading H and L register pairs with various numbers, doing a spot of comparing and adding, confirming whether the result is either zero, or not zero, and passing the result to the accumulator.... cool.gif ...!

Our bedrooms are still full dedicated programmers, and their hardware and software, enjoying our Sinclair Spectrum 48k's, Commodore C 64's, Amstrad CPC 464's, BBC B's....etc...etc... biggrin.gif ...!
