Hawkes Bay Airport Question

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby SeanTK » Sun Dec 09, 2012 7:49 am

Just downloaded Lawrie's Napier/Hawkes Bay airport as I have needed to reinstall it for a while.

I grabbed what I could from Avsim and Flightsim.com of what was needed for the "Static Objects Library" files, but upon seeing the airport in the sim, I am still having issues.
A few hangars and other structures are missing/invisible on the south side, and most of the cars are black. Not sure what other structures could be missing as well.

Not all of the packages that made up the "static objects library" according to the stickied link are available anymore either.

This is for FSX.

Never was a fan of those old <outside static objects> from days gone by , more and far better - well the quality are Tim's from VLC packages and Mike has been building them as well , the scenery's really needs this home grown base or a complete rebuild .

I had sort of similar issues, combined with a nasty drop in frame rate. Lawrie & I worked on trying to figure a solution for a while, but ended up getting nowhere. I know there are some who've downloaded the scenery & libraries and got it to work first pop, but I've tried twice on 2 computers & ended up with similar results. No idea what I'm doing wrong, as it's clear from Lawrie that the scenery works fine in FSX on his system. A shame, too, since I live in Napier and Lawrie's scenery is the only rendition of Napier for FSX that I know of, and it's not bad (although out of date now since it was completed a couple of year's back).

All my sceneries now do use only custom objects, combined with a few FSX default objects, and NZ objects from the VLC libraries.
Only the first few of my FSX sceneries used anything from the old Static Objects Library. I no longer use anything at all from the Static Objects Library.
As for Napier, there will be a total update of it in the future, which will include the recent runway extension, any new buildings, and the industrial estate thats under construction around the airport.
The FSX version of Napier that is on FlightSim.com at present, differs from the FSX version that was originally on my website.
There have been a number of SOL objects removed and replaced with VLC objects, as well as other minor updates to lighting, and taxiway lighting.

The list of objects in the sticky, was only from memory, for what objects are needed for any of my early FSX works..
Unfortunately, i no longer have all the original work files for my early FSX stuff, having lost it in an HDD failure.
I also lost a lot of more recent FSX stuff i was working on, and have had to start from scratch on them again.
I lost ALL my FS9 stuff in that failure as well, along with much other personal stuff, some of it irreplaceable unfortunately.

Seems like you can't catch a break between HDD crashes and hackers, Lawrie. Sorry to hear that.

I'll look forward to Napier (and everything else you'll release) in the future.

The previous HDD loss a couple of years back was on my main machine, it was the secondary drive on that machine ( fortunately not the one the OS and FSX are on !!).
The more recent one was on an older machine, that i was only using for backups !!
Ive just aquired a 1TB external drive for backups now.
Life goes on.................

Meanwhile....back at NZNR...new hangars and a 'business park' are in 'full swing'. I'm keeping tabs on progress in order to supply Lawrie with new buildings for a future revamp of FSX Napier.

Oh...I see IslandBoy77 is also handy to NZNR. You might know a bit more about future plans of the airport..maybe? I heard that the runway extension was not really enough and that no more money will be spent.

Hi Goff - I lost track of where the airport is at. I did speak to someone on the Council a while ago - they were somewhat "evasive" with their replies. dry.gif But my understanding is that yes, the whole project has pretty much ground to a halt and that "enthusiasm" has dwindled to "indifference". A shame in some ways, but not at all surprising.

Assume you mean the extra addition to the addition of the runway...but surely not the 'business park'. From a simmer's viewpoint, (FSX), I understand Lawrie would like to do a revamp at some stage. Maybe we'll wait a little longer to see what happens about the new buildings and additional hangars, (oh...and runway, of course).

Sorry, yes, I was referring to the runway only. I don't have any info on the "business park", just what I've observed on the ground from time to time. I don't get out that way much (I'm over near EIT), so haven't been keeping visual tabs on things.

What I'd like to see in the next Napier, which I'm happy to help Lawrie (or anyone else) with in whatever way is needed, are these things:
- Park Island: both the playing fields AND the actual 2 small hillocks - not havng those is such an "eyesore" on approach, since they are so obviously there
- Proper rendition of the various bridges in and around Pandora
- Decent rendition of the inner harbour
- Accurate up-to-date rendition of the port
- The Norfolk Pines placed all along Marine Parade AND West Shore
- Accurate rendering of that wildlife pond / reserve thing going on in the SE corner of the airfield
- Much better auto-genning or straight out object placement for housing, esp West Shore, and very much "especially" to render the eastern approach gap in the houses to runway 25
- Some sort of "proper" approximation of the Taradale area, especially the main shopping centre, EIT, Pettigrew Arena & The Mission: these, again, are sorely missing on the main southern approach
- A rendition of Bay View so the northern approach looks normal, as well as Whirinaki.
- Some sort of basic rendition of the main Napier shopping area, with a few special custom buildings like the A&B clock tower, The Warehouse / Noel Leemings complex, the sunken gardens etc along the foreshore, and of course Clive Square
- The Awatoto industrial area incl some way to have the right bridge types and some sort of "correct" mesh elevation for that area (esp so that the bridges don't have ramps at each end like they do now: yuck!)

Is all that so much to ask? tongue.gif

On my "dream list" is a 1 or 2 metre mesh for the Bay so that we can get the various shoreline elevations correct: I hate sitting on the runway looking east and seeing "flat", when, as you know, there is a pronounced rise and the whole area where the airport is has that distinct "sunken bowl" feeling going on. sad.gif

Sounds great...although I'm a bit wary of possible frame-rate hit. Of course, I'm happy to do 'my bit'.

Hmm, if Orbx are looking for a payware NI project, Napier/Hastings wouldn't be a silly idea.

Ian, Ian, Ian. How many times have I told you to stop smoking that stuff? tongue.gif I agree - some major Hastings landmarks would be great, too. But I thought perhaps my wish list was already too long by half, just trying to knock Napier into shape. dry.gif

True, except that I wouldn't buy the Orbx stuff. I think they do a fair job, but I prefer to support NZ developers, and I really do not like the way that they do an "Apple" with their stuff: it's our way or the highway. angry.gif

I'm also trying to install the NZNR scenery and having trouble sad.gif not sure which packages to install.
Sorry for hijacking your topic, but I can repay you by supplying pictures of Napier. Plus I live & work under the approach paths to the airport smile.gif

FS9 is still good with a good mesh and and a good texture package with all the free scenerys that come with .. For FSX- VLC Vector Land Class by Tim 'Timmo' Barnes cool.gif

Hey Mith: as Ian noted, VLC is the Vector Land Class add-on for FSX. While FS9 is still quite the good sim, visually you can't get anything to even closely resemble the Bay without FSX & VLC. Even with VLC and the free Bridge Pa + Laurie's Napier Airport, the Bay is still quite unconvincing, even at moderate altitude. And for those of us who like to fly "in the weeds", it's not a particularly good look at all. Still, if you want a big jump up from what you're seeing in FS9, you'll probably be reasonably pleased with FSX + VLC + Laurie's Napier Airport. If I had the time I'd indulge in a bit of object placement to help get rid of the blandness of the Bay in FSX (like putting the Phoenix Pines along the Parade: a very obvious thing missing in Napier), but regrettably I don't. sad.gif
