Don't you just hate it when you wake up somewhere strange on New Years Day, and don't know how you got there...

Well, the NZ developers could beat them at their own game by redoing their's to match Orbx - much as Mike has already done.Last edited by scaber on Wed Jan 02, 2013 9:01 pm, edited 1 time in total.![]()

That is fine but why didn't OBX look at the NZ developers stuff and develop their scenery to accommodate the NZ developers instead of the NZ developers having to redo all their scenery to match OBX.
From what I can see is that ORBX wants to kill off the NZ developers and take over the whole lot for themselves just a selfish pack of never mind I wont say it

Good to hear, Mike. I was hoping you'd be responsible for at least one of their announced releases, though, I think you'd have a lot to offer an Orbx NZ project.dbcunnz wrote:QUOTE (dbcunnz @ Jan 1 2013,6:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>If ORBX was to consult and work with the NZ developers then I'm sure that there wouldn't be all this agro
Just to clarify, Orbx did talk to me early on about releasing my stuff as Orbx products, but I decided against it -- I'm too used to doing things my way, I think. I've said before, though, that there is a real need for some freeware developers to come to some sort of arrangement with Orbx, which would benefit NZ simmers well beyond the shelf-life of FTX NZ.Last edited by toprob on Tue Jan 01, 2013 5:55 pm, edited 1 time in total.

From where I've been sitting lately, this "agro" appears to be coming from some of the NZFF membership, not local developers. Both Robin and Mike have stated their position; Orbx, theirs. Can't we let sleeping dogs lie?Regards,
Dorian

no but i am sure that Nz developers will win here is a very short and classified tactic.
All devel band together and make a mega alliance of Nz developers
Then begin work on New Zealand X which will cover the Beauty of NZ to the full and more accurately then Orbx (for instance correct me if i am wrong but Orbx is not photo real so if you made it really good you could navigate your way to Linwood to pick up my Nan and Papa and drive them to Wigram to take them to the Museum.Last edited by Yob on Wed Jan 02, 2013 6:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.Eli'jah

Really, the idea of competing for the NZ scenery market is new, and a little off-putting -- until now, local developers have shared the market as best they could, and even collaborated at times. Now I know that freeware developers don't need to worry too much about market share, so I can only speak for myself as a payware developer. There is nothing to be gained in fighting for a share of the NZ market, it is far too small. Personally I'd be happy to sit out the next year or two, and come back when the market returns to 'normal'.

One small problem with that axiom: what if the "others" want to change the way you live? And, what if the way you want to live your life conflicts with how others want to live theirs? Fact is, humans aren't tolerant of one another - we like our lives the way we like them. I've noted that "tolerant" people are only tolerant of those who think the way they do. There are all sorts of "gotchas" to "big players" like Orbx muscling in to a very small market like NZ - it will be interesting to have this conversation again in 2 years and see whether the overall long-term result for NZ is positive or negative. My money is on negative, judging by how things have worked out in other industries when a big player moves into a niche area...
