I have now created a new seasonal tree texture set. I have also done some more modding on my previous textures.

I like that autumn shot - reminds me of those places in the US where they massive numbers of trees turning red, yellow & orange during autumn. I think you've really added a nice feel to Outerra, doubly so since it's still at such a very early stage of development, and you aren't working with the final tools, layers and programming that will surely make seasons far easier to do. thumbup1.gif

I do like the distance , the mountain range in the back , real feeling of depth , typically a bright clear day .. be interesting to see it progress

Yeah, Outerra is a fair way from completion so i'm just having fun with what I can play with.

With automated time flow (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=1426.0) and normal mapping on terrain textures (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=1445.0) announced recently we can see the strength of this engine improving.

The distant mountains and scenery is due to the FOV (Field of View) angle selectable for flat or spherical screens which gives a real scale feel for the scenery.

This is really a tease. If we can have an ultra realistic physics and flight modeling engine combined with this type of scenery then the pc will have finally realised its potential as a credible flight training platform.

I've been dabbling in other sims lately, DCS and Falcon BMS namely and both offer such fidelity in the flight models that FSX feels two dimensional and arcade by comparison. I hope Outerra eventually fills the gap left in the civil sim market.

The Outerra engine is expected to be a capable flight simulation platform, it is purely a question of who will pick it up and run with it to develop for. It has already integrated JSBSim flight dynamics which far supersedes the current ESP code and it is constantly begin improved. Also bullet physics is used which already shows its capabilities when it comes to collision handling.

I hope someone does take this up as a flight sim platform however the amount of work required is vast. A global database of airports, runways and working navigation radio frequencies would be a bohemouth task in itself....things we take for granted within MSFS.

We do take these for granted. However, the information is available, even though the task of recreating a flight simulator the information we have is adequate and up to date. But you are right, the man hours to put it all together would be tremendous. I am believing that at this point in time there would be an API to link to the engine and therefore open source plugins would be possible. Look at flight gear, even though it isn't the prettiest it does have the core. i think we can be closed thinking about this, it could go any direction at this point. These guys are Indie developers so this could work in our favour!?

Agreed. I keep an eye on Flightgear as well, but as with Outerra, my current video card doesn't like the current crop of drivers. As noted, Flightgear is a bit crude graphics wise, but while they have a bit of work to do to catch up to some of the Outerra fundamentals, they are quite a way ahead in terms of the actual real-world flying side of things. As noted, it will be a big task to start bolting on an actual flight sim to the Outerra engine (even though I think flying is one of the most ideal fits for Outerra), and it will be interesting to see whether such is open-sourced or picked up by someone with deep pockets. I wonder if Larry from Oracle would mind forgoing a new car, house or yacht this year, and instead employ a few people on the Outerra project... dry.gif We should be so lucky. tongue.gif
