Chopper pilot, passengers make lucky escape

A helicopter pilot and three passengers had a lucky escape after an emergency landing on Lake Rotorua this morning.

The Volcanic Air Safaris helicopter landed in shallow water off the shore at Lake Road, after encountering mechanical problems.

Police say all on board managed to walk away in knee deep water.

End of the day , that is one lady driver i'd stick with ... but for the Helio, I'd have to really check one out , Nick 'choppernut' would be the best on its operations

Ive done probably around 100 hours in various models of R44s. The one thing I will say is that they are probably the best machine in that category for taking tourists around but they arnt a working helicopter. What I mean with that is that they are not designed to have a load underneath them, they are not designed to have spray gear mounted to them etc. It is a reality of the industry that this sort of thing goes on and with a good operator, they can be operated safely on aerial work operations but they arnt as robust as a JR.
