Plane Finder

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby Bazza » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:50 am

I recently downloaded this site to have a look at it. It basically tracks thousands of flights throughout the world.
It appears to be a bit of a failure as far as New Zealand is concerned seemingly recording no "regional flights", i.e nothing
into Tauranga, Rotorua, Invercargill, Hamilton etc etc.

The radar type tracking system used is ADS-B. Can anyone with a knowledge of NZ systems advise if it is used in this
Country, I suspect Air New Zealand may not be using it. The aircraft I can see on screen are Jetstar, Thai, Qantas etc.

Otherwise it could be a fascinating program.

Doug loves to track using a similar radar spot and watch but that also miss's all regional flights simply due to not have the transmitter/radio gear on board .

If it had these flights , the Air Chatham group to the Air Force it would be superb .. and think of the possible safety feature of having the entire country not only of flight simmers but just those interested in looking , think the transponders and beacons should be manditory not only for us armchair ATC guys but general eyeballs interested....... the best todays plane spotters with the laptops out at the airports would fantastic !

Some precision work by a Singapore Airlines 777 crew.
My little town is under the smaller racetrack, almost plumb in the middle

Well, I'm not sure about accuracy, this is either a pilot taking his passengers for a joy ride or it's the biggest muckup since Dunkirk.

This is Air New Zealand going to Queenstown, and yes it carried on out to sea and as far as I know it's still going. That is the bottom left hand corner of New Zealand. ohmy.gif

At least it is ANZ so I have sorted that out.....however the only ANZ flying in NZ at that time, about midday...? Doesn't seem
right to me.

Comparing this site and flightradar24.com at the same time right now, and I see flightradar24 has more planes (extra to) & exactly the same planes planefinder has. Not sure what the advantage to using the plane tracker is on the planefinder site, but their route tracker page is very cool. Thanks for the heads up.

However, my original question remains......do our regional flights have the ADS-B system. I have found by selecting
flights at random in the States, planes such as Cessnas, Embraers being covered by these devices.

It's possible that the system just extrapolates the last known position and heading which, if flying into Queenstown, might mean that that position was just before it descended under the level of the surrounding terrain and out of Radar coverage

Flightradar24 picks up more aircraft and also give more details IE; ETA etc the only regional flights picked up are the Mt Cook RTA-600 and there are a couple of biz jets and a couple of choppers that you can see sometimes

That certainly makes sense as I've noticed this happening before at Queenstown. However, last night a flight terminating in Auckland just carried on into the distance, my original thought was that it was going to Ardmore but this didn't happen.
I can't see that result being caused by terrain.

I think I'll run the FlightRadar for a while and see if it has less glitches. It's the sort of thing that fascinates for a while then becomes a bit pointless. My original intention was to check on the passenger stuff that comes over
my house before the final run in over the sea to land at Tauranga. Obviously this isn't going to happen.

Exactly my point as well , to follow aircraft in , all not the one or two with the latest equipment - to be able to follow a flight in .. same with todays tech .. take the laptop out to the airport as a tool to track incoming , I followed the 787 into from home and using scanner and PC into Wobblyville it worked great .

Flightradar24 can link into Google Earth and provide a "cockpit view" from a selected aircraft. Only trouble for me is, GE at the moment does not work with 64-bit browsers. For the same reason, I can't use the NZFF scenery finder.
However, with Planefinder I can also link to live ATC on the net, and the combo makes an excellent displacement activity when there is housework and suchlike to be done biggrin.gif

No not yet but it is coming. At this stage only the heavy stuff has it..

Presently Only way to Track 'Link' Traffic is the Subscription service FE Personal Edition http://www.flightexplorer.com/ at US $9.95 for 10 hrs with 10 min minimum on each log in with Each Hour over the first 10 charged out @ US$1.95 - FE Personal is also very dumbed down version of the Pro version.

Reason for lack of alt on some tags in FE Personal Edition & the alt showing on some is only assigned alt no climb or descent data.

Interesting HamWest, I didn't know it was possible to display non ABS-B movements.

Any idea how the data is displayed? Is it based off filed fight plans or is there another way for mode S transponders to be uplinked to the web?
