telstar electric problem

Yet another one in my stable is crook.
Its an 86 telstar ghia (2L) lovely old girl with only 130k , not bad for an 86 i think.
Anyway, its been starting well for the past year or so .... but on monday morning ...dead as a dodo , i assumed i had left something on, so called the AA , jump start and away i went.
After work , jump in ....dead again. I noticed that the battery was about 6 years old and had a lot of that green stuff growing on , so i got a new one ... threw it in , drove home (2 or 3 stops and starts in between) all good.

This morning ... dead again. ?? its got me stuffed , never any sign of the alternator light after starting, leads are all tight and clean .

So im back in the old corolla (280ks) ...dear old thing just keeps going. Cant use the BM as he's still a grand away from being road ready.

Any ideas ?

Not a car man , but had this on my 1100 and found it was the solenoid , easy enough to start to cross a insulated screwdriver across the connections to get to the shop for a part - with a bike easy but a car would not no were to start , sounds like the same symptoms tho .

Sounds to me like you might have an electrical drain somewhere. Or possibly a dud alternator. But it's not uncommon in older cars to have electrical drains from frayed or worn wiring etc.

Perhaps google "tracing an electrical drain" and use a multimeter to check it out?

Alternator , same thing as a your solenoid? least think so , .. Marty have a multimeter if you require it

No Ian , but a good thought. I think it must have a short somewhere.
Just re called that the dash lights have been out of action , meaning, when i turn the key to the prestart position there are no lights (batt , oil etc) so if the alternator is stuffed im not getting an indication .... checked the fuse's and they seem fine (none blown)
So, its off to the auto sparky for a fix then im flicking it.

For sale ! 1986 ford telstar ghia , 2.0l ghia , auto, towbar, wof and reg, new batt. Good hack , no rust, drives well. offers
