Air Chathams - jumpseat ride

I am an aviation enthusiast from Hong Kong and is currently planning my first trip to New Zealand later this year. One of the things I would love to do in NZ is making flights on Air Chathams’ Convair 580.

I’ve seen some photos/videos taken by other enthusiasts from the jumpseat on Air Chathams’ flights, but they were mostly taken a few years ago. Does anyone know if Air Chathams still allows passengers to ride on the jumpseat or not? Needless to say, it would be an unforgettable experience if I could make a flight in the cockpit of the classic Convair!

Welcome to NZFF Dreamliner!, Re Jumpseat Ride, Im sure they would be more than happy to, Last year one of my friends went on a charter on one and he sat in the cockpit for the entire flight, no harm in asking!

Many thanks for your replies, gentlemen. If I can sit on the jumpseat during the flight, I imagine that I'll just sit there and enjoy the wonder of flying in the cockpit of a real classic aeroplane!

Hi ya Dreamliner and the welcomes from all .. the Convair may not be one , but is a CLASSIC , most hulls are dated around 1962 and regularly have the Chatham flights head directly out over home here and the sound is as distinctive as the Alison is , makes ya look up ! .. maybe one off the few airlines Air Chathams you may get the ride if you send a letter to the company today asking your intentions.

Hi there,

Ask the flight attendant when checking in at the Chathams for the return flight back to NZ. If there is no training going on or crew occupying the jumpseat most of the crew are generally happy to show off the old girls. Especially if there is a large load of fish on in the back we sometimes need an extra bum further forward to keep the CofG in the right place. If you're coming to the Chathams, stay a few days and also go to Pitt Island on the Cessna 206.
