Yes, you guys are right, the reason the 747s are retiring is due to them not being fuel efficient. The amount of fuel in this planet is decreasing and global demand for fuel goes beyond exploration as one day, there will be no fuel. Thats the reason why fuel prices are rising above expectations to keep the 747 flying and long haul demand has been going down because of this. People from all over the world and fuel companies are trying to find fuel resources but enviromental groups like Greenpeace etc are stopping fuel companies from drilling oil. I dont know what the hell are Greenpeace doing to stop us from getting fuel! angry.gif These problems are causing financial problems for airlines such as Air New Zealand wasting millions of dollars on aviation fuel and this is not good at all!!! They should leave us and our fuel companies alone and let them drill oil so our aircraft can stay in the fleet!! This is going to be a huge global problem for all the airlines. The losses suffered by all the airlines in the world is because of this! Even this is causing some some airlines in the world to cease operations and/or merge with other airlines. The aviation industry is demanding for fuel and money and losing such special aircraft like these 747s! I am feeling very disappointed about the way enviromental groups are stopping aviation fuel from reaching us and these problems are getting worse and worse!! angry.gif.

The world will never run out of fuel/oil, the only thing stopping us getting it is as you say greenpeace etc

Here's a different link to that video, as yours weren't working for me :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv4ctyatHpk

ANZ mate told me they (747) burns just over 1 million $ in fuel from AKL - LAX and that was the primary reason for phasing them out - real sad to see perfectly good airplanes getting wrecked (and don't get me started about the Concorde!... cest la vie). winkyy.gif

Apparently they have 787 Dreamliners on order sad.gif

I would be surprised if the cost of fuel was more than $2 per litre. A typical fuel burn from AKL to LAX is 150,000 litres. That would make the cost of fuel $300,000. I would be surprised if it was that much as the fuel oil barrel cost is around 73.5 cents/litre.
In typical airline economics:
Freight pays for fuel
Economy pax pay for operation costs and overheads
Premium class = profit.

A shame the 747 could not be re-engined but that would cut into 747-8 sales. A fully furbished and re-engined 747-400 would still be way cheaper than a 747-8.

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

There's hope yet... beyond Lufthansa, has Boeing sold any 747-800 passenger versions???
It's their own fault, for painting it lurid pink at launch smile.gif

Looks like Korean have a tentative order for 5. Garuda is looking at the 747-8 or A380. Hong Kong Air looking at 15 but not sure on the variants. At 1.75 airframes a month they might be waiting a while.
Maybe it will be a late starter.

Thanks for that Ian, here YET ANOTHER VIDEO!!!!!

However this time, ZK-SUJ Departing LAX bound for Israel to be converted into a freighter for Southern Air.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jks1f6hPqLA

Even, this is the answer for Cowpatz's question "not sure for which operator though".

Well I have been seeing videos on YouTube and shots of the PMDG 747, a very good aircraft and PMDG should be commended for this great aircraft, but for me, it would cost a lot of $$$, like about $102 for the 747-400X, but however I have 2 items on my wishlist

1. VectorLandclass scenery of NZ

2. GSX by FSdreamteam.

Well Don't get me started on the ARBUST!!! or GET SOME ARBUST IN YA!!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

The PMDG is exceptional ... a new version to be released shortly .. i wonder if it is discounted for the early FSX drivers .. i would doubt it , as for the ARBUST - only got it to be with the in-crowd , its good ....to with the in-crowd winkyy.gif

Just recently on July 18 2013, a Air Pacific (Fiji Airways) 747-400 registered DQ-FJL has been retired from their fleet and was shipped to Tupelo to be scrapped

RIP DQ-FJL, you will be sadly missed sad.gif
