ADE will let you use a thumbnail.gif, but it will not bulk load them, so you have to find and load each one individually.
It seems ADE is set to only bulk load thumbnail.jpg files.
Luckily IrfanView has a good Batch Converter and it took only a few minutes to convert the whole lot to jpg, with IV placing the output directly into the ADE /FSX/ Thumbs folder.
