VLC Library

Information and support relating to this forthcoming New Zealand Vector Land Class addon.

Thanks for clarifying that Rob.

I suspect FS doesn't have my model to show it. I'm erasing all Whisplacer's entries in the 'Simobjects\Misc\Whisplacer Scenery' folder and rebuild them again.

OK, I GIVE UP.

No matter what I do I can't get my model to show in FS. What method do the professionals use?

I assume being able to see it with Whisplacer active would mean the model successfully exported to FS?

If I include a VLC Library object, that will show but not my model. What is going on? It can't be this hard to produce scenery surely!

It used to be harder:)

Why not send me the files (library/textures/placement) and I'll take a look. Zip them up and post them here, or if you don't want to do that I'll let you have my email address.

EDIT: just a thought -- Whisplacer might display something if the library object exists, but I don't think it checks to see if it is activated. Whisplacer actually makes a duplicate of the model as a simobject, so it doesn't need to be activated to display it in Whisplacer. How sure are you that the folder which contains your library is actually active?

Hi Robin,

I'm certain that the folder is active because when I update the folder with a compiled bgl that includes my model and a VLC object, the VLC object shows.

I'll assemble the files and upload them for you to see. What's the best way to get them to you?

Thanks for your guidance Robin, so appreciated!

Looks like a nice place to live!
I dropped the 2 BGLs into Addon Scenery\scenery, and all the textures into Addon Scenery\texture, and the house displays fine. Do you have your scenery complexity to at least Normal?

Hi Rob,

Well I don't know. I did just that and now I have a house! I put both BGL's into my scenery folder of the Stokes Valley folder and hey presto. Do I need both BGL's? I was only using one before. I think the Manuka St house1 must contain the model info and the other just has the location. How do I combine them into a single BGL? I was just using the testhouse.bgl (1k file) before so I believe my model hasn't been imported properly into FSX.

Thanks Rob,

Yep, that's basically what you want. One file is a 'library' of all your models, and the other is the placement file. You can combine them into one, but that isn't really necessary. Combining them into one will 'geo-lock' the models, preventing them from being used in other scenery outside your scenery area.

Geo-locking is sometimes used to prevent other people from placing your models. It won't secure them from theft, though.

If you do want to combine the object and placement files, then you can't use libraries, you'd need to import the MDL files directly into Whisplacer (Library Manager | Current Scenery | add object).

Libraries are far more useful, in that they can grow over time as you create more models, and you can place them as many times as you like -- like you do with default library objects.

Thats great Rob but one thing still bugs me.

How come I can place a VLC tree without the model file but I can't place my model. Both object libraries were imported the same way at the same time. It still appears FSX doesn't have my model in it's library.

Because the VLC tree is in the VLC Libraries, not your scenery folder, and is is activated when it installed itself. You don't include them in your scenery, just pointers to them (by calling the GUID.)
You only ever want ONE object per GUID, but you can call it as many times as you want when you place it, whether in the same placement file or completely different sceneries.
If you published a scenery which combined your own models with VLC trees, for instance, you would not include the actual tree model in your scenery, you just reference it. Including it in your scenery is actually against the EULA, but referencing it is great -- go for it!

If you give your scenery to someone, and they don't have the VLC Libraries installed, they won't see the trees until they install the VLC Libraries.

Like the VLC Libraries, your own libraries need to be included in an properly activated scenery folder -- the VLC Libraries are automatically installed this way, your own scenery would need it's own folder system. (Or as I did, just drop the files into a pre-activated folder, such as Addon Scenery.)

Thank-you Rob. I understand that.

Sorry for all the questions. The learning process takes longer the older we get!

Cheers
