The Great Windows Taskbar slowdown

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby AlisterC » Sun Apr 27, 2014 3:23 pm

Hi all,

So I've not been all that happy with FSX of late. Even after trying the Nvidia inspector settings via a friend online, my performance dropped off again. I've not done any actual flying today, just been doing a bit of tweaking under the hood.

Firstly, I thought I might shift from my wide screen monitor over to my smaller 17 inch square monitor. So I clicked the appropriate MS Window button on the top right of the window (I run in window mode). My sim window shrunk down in size from full screen and suddenly I was up over 100fps! And I was only getting 30-40fps in the default cessna in fair weather in spot view up until that point. You can imagine how low I would get in something payware and complicated. So I gradually increased the size of the window until it was almost full screen coverage again, and I was still getting 100+ fps! What the heck is going on? It was 30fps a minute ago. Then I extended it just lower than the windows circle/ start button on the task bar, and there you have it, back to 30-40fps.

So I turned on the auto hide of the task bar, and went full screen. I now attach pictures to show you the results. This is on windows 7, 64 bit. So perhaps it is something worth trying if you want some better fps performance from your FSX, and like me before, you have the task bar always showing. It might be time for you to hide it. That for me was a 60-70fps improvement.

Actually, now I've simply increased the sliders on my sim to make up for some of the increased performance I have gained.. So I've not gained 60-70fps overall lol. I now have heaps of trees and my ifly 737 running at 45fps, instead of no trees and 20-25fps.

Anyway, check the results. Any comments welcome!

Nothing running in the background, we have been playing around with the MP's over the last couple week month, for some reason and across the board everyone was affected, I wonder if it may have been another MS patch that did corrupt your FS setup?

No Ian, nothing else affecting this, just something to do with windows graphics. Not sure. Running FSX automatically switches Win 7 into basic mode, but even still, quite the difference in performance here. I have an install that is only a couple of months old, I don't have any background processes affecting anything smile.gif

I don't have a problem Ian, actually this is the fix. Just thought I would throw it out there and see what everyone thought of it.
