Orbx Global & AI Traffic

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Dash8captain » Tue Apr 29, 2014 10:10 pm

Just wondering what those of you who have Orbx Global think of it as an addon?

Was thinking of purchasing it - the problem I have is I don't like to fly anywhere else in the world cos I dont want to see the ghastly default terrain - so I just stick to NZ with NZSI and NZNI

Is it FPS Heavy? and is it a realistic addon?

The other thing I was wanting too is a good AI Traffic program - the FTX traffic is awesome but it only covers NZ and AUS, I'm not sure whether to go to a bigger one like UT2 (Ultimate Traffic 2) cos I dont know what the coverage is like when I am in NZ - and they seem to be very FPS Heavy

Can anyone give any suggestions on this also?

Cheers

Global is good, it's just replacement textures and is definatly an improvement over *cough* default..

As for AI Traffic Packages, 360 and UT are "Convenient" but some of the models are just not worth opening your eyes to see. For the most part most of the models are ok tho. However I Would suggest this as an alternative. Either build your own up like I am doing BUT this is VERY time intensive or use this http://iceaitraffic.altervista.org/english.html This is IceAI, freeware, contains just as just as much as 360 or UT but using a lot better models that are more up to date, frame friendly and pretty much what I am using to build mine just now.

Is IceAI world wide?

Dash8, I don't have FTX Global, but it shouldn't hit your frames. However, you may want to consider getting the FS Global Mesh at the same time, as most of the default terrain is very flat and boring. Also bear in mind that it's not the same quality as the FTX regions. It doesn't have custom placed landmarks (such as lighthouses, wind farms, little farm buildings, etc...) nor does it have any upgraded airports - so most of the airports will still probably be fairly basic or have nothing at all. You will also need the Vector addon to have accurately placed roads, as well as OpenLC for accurate landclass. So it all gets a bit expensive! Still, even the base product is a huge improvement on the default terrain (from what I have seen).

Like you though I tend to stick to NZ (or other Orbx regions) because the quality is so high in those areas.

IceAI is worldwide, it's basically just a giant compiled AI set from whats available on Avsim or Flightsim.com. It's not complete, but all the major airlines are there, it's just some of the minor airlines that are missing (I can't even find plans for them myself) and it will definitely fill up your airports.

RE: FTX Global Mesh, it's not the best and can cause some issues with addon scenery (Esp airports) there are plenty of excellent free mesh's on the above mentioned sites and others as well that are normally universally compatible with any addons. Just something to bear in mind.

The AI package added way too many aircraft for me so I ditched it.

Can't you just turn down the AI traffic?

So break out an editor and filter out the airlines you don't want (or need) and delete the aircraft for it...

I offered IceAI as a free alternative to spending real $$$ on AI packages who's models were not as good as the freeware ones available on the various websites that are compiled in IceAI, and I did mention how much it contained.

I did a lot of testing for an AI package, some models were fine ... but hugely a lot were so 2000, recommend what Owen is doing , send him a stick or what ever to get it .

I got told off for mentioning IceAI in Avsim! Was told that it's mostly pirated copies of other people's work that was taken without their consent, nor have they even acknowledged the original creator.

As I have mentioned it's just a compiled package of the currently available freeware aircraft and flightplans out there. As for being told off in Avsim, get used to it, it's become more and more frequent as the place is becoming a dictatorship...

Yip today I don't like AVSIM that much , to bloody messy these days, least pre-crash/hack seem to be a little more friendly, so with the amount forums and service areas and custom it dose I guess its the best way to go to protect the site.

I have been registered at Avsim for more years than I care to remember, but these days I go direct to the library: http://library.avsim.net/
Ease of access to their home page deteriorated about six months back, and has not recovered. Maybe they don't have the server capacity for all the things they have introduced, I wouldn't know.
The library is fine, and provides fast downloading. thumbup1.gif

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

That was the handy thing , the download, but saying that Flightsim.com was/is slow - use a D/L manager - and easier to upload to the public .

They say that issues were caused by tapatalk, which they've now removed. I admit I used tapatalk a lot for Avsim, so I tend to visit less now that it's gone, but hopefully it has sped things up a bit.

Regardless, it's rude to take other peoples work and distribute it without consent. Nowhere on their website does it mention this other than...

...which is worded in such away that it is misleading. As if they've done the work solely for this development of IceAI. They've had their website shut down at multiple hosts for copyright infringement. I don't think it's a good idea to be promoting it.

Oh and when I say told off, it was more of a friendly heads-up and that I probably shouldn't mention it again. Nothing sinister or rude about it.

Avsim do it all the time, and come to think of it, WOAI is not much better in that dept. We don't know the in's and out's of what their agreements are or aren't with people. We only go by what we get told.
