What an amazingly great set of shots !!
1950s design or not,........ still a beautiful, well proportioned, and graceful aircraft.
To say nothing, of that unique and unforgettable sound..........

Thanks guys - and especially you Lawrie your photos are a great reference to this brilliant aircraft! - I love being able to bring iconic aircraft such as this into life with photos - as back in the day we never had cameras like we do now, and see the older generation on here enjoy it!

Well,......... i found the final resting place of Fokker Friendship F27-100 C/N 10286 ZK-BXI "Kotare"
Arrived new in New Zealand at Christchurch on 18th November 1965 flying with NAC until the merger with Air NZ in April 1978.
Retired from Air New Zealand service in 1990, and spent the remainder of its life at Christchurch for maintainance training, where, over the years, it lost many
of its vital parts.
It was finally cut up and shipped out to its final resting place around 2012.

These photos were taken mid 2013 at Kaingaroa at the Chatham Islands Aviation Museum,.......................

Interestingly,............... the wings arent hers. They come from VT-NED, which has been derelict at NZWB Woodbourne for quite some time.
Hopefully, like ZK-BXG at Ashburton, she will be restored to her former glory one day.

An aviation museum in the Chatham's .... the Sunderland yip ... now are they going to get the most relevant aircraft from , surely there is a spear Bristol floating around ... the Chatham's a tourist resort maybe for people who like dipping poles in the water and diving I guess .. for people like me only thing to do is try and glue whats left there in this Museum ... sorry to say I'd concern my self on the Sunderland. ... I do like the community so small looking at doing something like this.

The Sunderland was ex RAF VB880, taken on charge by the RNZAF at Fiji in September 1953 as NZ4111.
Landing on the Te Whanga lagoon in the Chathams 04-11-59, it struck submerged rocks while taxi-ing in shallow water and sunk.

Yes, a B170 Bristol would certainly be the right thing to add to the museum, so much history of them flying out there for many years, as did the Friendships for a while, and also Mt Cook HS748's for a while. And, of course, Doug's baby........ The "Whistling Wheelbarrow". Argosy's were frequent flyers out there too.

Hey, we'll go out there together,............ you work on helping put the Sunderland together, and i'll work on helping put the Friendship together smile.gif

They were the first and only secondary the the Holm Shipping company - the Holmdale always appeared in Lyttleton but the Bristol gos back as the first real regular air pax/freighter, course the lagoon crossing truck/bus built from an old WWII six wheeler .. now that may be easier to find .

The Very First Friendship in New Zealand
A brief history...............

Fokker Friendship F27-100 C/N 10166 ZK-BXA "Kuaka" (Godwit)

The first brand new Friendship for NAC departed the Netherlands on December 1st, 1960, and arrived in Wellington on the 12th of December 1960.
The delivery route was via Rome, Athens, Damascus, Karachi, Delhi, Calcutta, Bangkok, Zamboonango, Davao, Divak, Darwin, Mount Isa, Brisbane and Norfolk Island.
It was officially named "Kuaka" by Lady Isitt on arrival, and entered service with NAC on 22 December 1960.
ZK-BXA served NAC faithfully for 17 years, and was withdrawn from service at the time of the merger with Air New Zealand in 1978, and its rego cancelled on 18th April 1978.

The aircraft was then leased to Merpati Nusantara Airlines of Indonesia as PK-MFS.

On the 18th of December that same year, the aircraft was badly damaged in a wheels-up landing at Palembang airport.
After extensive repairs, the aircraft was sold to Airfast Services and registered as 9V-BLE, but later returned
to Indonesia registered as PK-OBP.

The aircraft was later sold to Flanders Airlines in Belgium, registered as OO-SVN.

It was later then sold to Burundi BCR Air Charter in Africa, registered as 9U-BHE, but never ended up going there.

It was last reported as being owned by Transocean, but placed in storage at Dinard, in France.

Another brief history...........

This time its Fokker F27-500 ZK-NFA c/n 10551 "Kotuku" (White Heron)

ZK-NFA was the FIRST brand-new stretched 500 series F27 that NAC purchased.
She was registered as PH-EXA for her first test flight in the Netherlands.
ZK-NFA arrived new in New Zealand on the 7th of April 1977, less than year before the NAC merger with Air New Zealand.

ZK-NFA inside the Fokker factory at Schipol Airport (EHAM), December 1976.

ZK-NFA in her NAC livery, over the Southern Alps in 1978

ZK-NFA at Hokitika (NZHK) still wearing the interim Air New Zealand livery in April 1980

ZK-NFA at Auckland Airport (NZAA) in the final blue/green Air New Zealand livery, in August 1983

ZK-NFA Cabin Interior in April 1990.

When finally retired by Air New Zealand, ZK-NFA went to Merpati Nusantara Air of Indonesia in 1992 as PK-MFF, along with sister ship ZK-NFB.
Last known to be still flying in Indonesia.

ZK-NFA now PK-MFF

A gentleman at CalClassic has developed a VC model to fit in Tom Gibson's upgrade of Mike Stone's F27, and it has been released as a Beta.
I have been playing around with it all afternoon, and was about to ask for some RL pics...then I looked in to NZFF and there were some newly posted! biggrin.gif
So naturally, I put up a screenie..this is FSX, and it is really meant for FS9, so there is a bit of tinkering still to do. I used the sound from Rick's 748, and it is good, even though these days I find the sound of turbine engines very irritating... didn't use to sad.gif
