SR71 cockpit

Pretty rudimentary.

I have a nice little book here on what they are like to fly ... one driver compared it to the 102/106 .. guess its the same as the 58 in driving skills.

Nice pictures the SR71 has a lot of history back in the cold war one SR71 was intercepted by some fighters in Europe and the pilot got the guy in the back seat to give them the finger and then the pilot accelerated away full afterburner. (I cant remember the reason it may have been a mechanical fault that caused them to drop to lower altitude).
Other things that have happened one time an SR71 was carrying a drone on the back and they were testing releasing it at higher speed than their earlier tests and the drone hit the back of the SR71 causing it to break in half. Both pilots ejected with them being 100s NM apart(one died because he landed in the Ocean).

When they were developing the fuel for the SR71 the engineers blew up the hangar where they were building the SR71.

Some other funny stuff:

Variants
SR-71A was the main production variant.
SR-71B was a trainer variant.
SR-71C was a hybrid aircraft composed of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and the forward fuselage from an SR-71 static test unit. The YF-12 had been wrecked in a 1966 landing accident. This Blackbird was seemingly not quite straight and had a yaw at supersonic speeds.[96] It was nicknamed "The ######".[/quote]
lol the forum doesn't like the B word.

With the paint worn off along the side of the cockpit, looks like they have been driving with their arm out the window. LOL.

Great 'plane- all the same, I remember when they broke the speed record usa to uk. Opps am I really that old???

Well comparatively speaking. Panel ergonomics in those days consisted of throwing dials and switches at the panel and mounting them where they fell! Plenty to fiddle with though.
Only one nav radio that I can see....couldn't find any other nav unit in my scans.
