Glad i wasn't flying

There i was , inbound for NZIP (Ians place) 10 minutes out , southerly on the nose , light rain.
100 kph , everything in the green . CVR will reveal a badly sung version of heartbreak hotel , interrupted by a large bang , and several expletives .

Ive never heard anything like it , huge backfire kind of sound , but it appeared to be through the carb , not out the back . High pitched screaming noise for a few seconds (not me), vibration and smoke coming inside.
Managed to get out of the traffic , no motor at all now , and stopped . Cop on a motorbike (nice BMW) turned up for look , and arranged the tow .... cheers dude.

Anyway , I cant explain the bang , but the main belt was gone and bits of it were stuck in the manifold , the top pulley has seized , and the air cleaner cover had two of the clips off.And what looks like a little rubber tube hanging off the side of the carb ..... very odd.

The top pulley is understandable (i think) water pump bearing ? .... but what about the other stuff , didn't try to restart it .
The old girl was just a few hundred k off 300,000

So Ian , I'll try again on sunday in another one ..... I'll bring the cheese

Gawd ! you really are going through a rough spot! and just to finish you off 10.30 this morning was not ideal to be broken down on the shoulder of the southern motorway ... me as the ex-engineer would have thought right ... lets strap that jet engine on the roof and put it to some use

Yeah .... but that has to be the last thing surely . Maybe its karma .. Once this funeral (for my mate , not the car) is out of the way I reckon things will be on the up .
I should have a little send off for the car ... she did well for so long and was really neglected . Ill take the plates in on monday and cancel the insurance , really not worth fixing a $500 car i guess.
Ive got another one plus the german ... but I'll miss that one ... smokey old bugger she was. But her bits will live on , the panels are all straight , interior is fine , and 4 new tires ..... only got a wof last week .

I think Joan really had a moan today, I'm not the cost off a new engine these days ... WOF and it gos bang BUGGER! ... as straight as it is, maybe a Uni student may take it off your hands.

I remember in the early 1960s, Jack Brabham's car came quite spectacularly undone on the Home Straight at Brands Hatch - metal bits and oil smeared over about 200m of the track. The Beeb TV commentator at that time was a mad Scot named Fyfe Robertson, who had a real gift for stating the bleedin' obvious. He interviewed Jack in the pits:
"You're out of the race, Jack - what was the problem?"
"Ignition failure"
"IGNITION FAILURE???"
"Yair, Fyfe, the conrod came through the block and cut the lead from the battery...."
