I present surely the ugliest thing to come out of Italy for awhile, the mighty Stipa Caproni. On a bumble-bee like glide into Whangarei airport over the harbour..
Would take a braver man than me to test fly this thing, but apparently was quite innovative in its own way (claiming to have influenced later jet engine design), yes the fuselage is hollow

Brave indeed, how many people can say that they took their windtunnel for a spin?

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

On August 23, 1981 this Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair made its way into Nelson as i was not born so have no recollection, only the photos that mum n Dad have saved for me in a scrap book.

Growing up this A/C (From the Scrap book) always stuck out like a sore thumb (As the UGLY A/C big nose Guppy it was to me) clapping.gif

A few miles north of Ashburton, spotted this 'rara avis'. It's the Curtiss-Goupil Duck - built by Mr C as part of his defense against the Wright Brothers' patent lawsuit.
