Hey NZFFers. Am now in the Lone Star State, having taken a journey from hell down from Vancouver to Dallas via Denver. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

My colleague got hassled entering the US, I had to apply for a visa waiver at the last minute in the airport so almost missed my flight. In Denver all of United's flights were running late due to weather. Then the flight we were waiting on got held up coz there was a CRJ at our gate that was running late on departure. When our ERJ finally pulled in there was a delay of over an hour coz the wind-shield wiper was broken, then to top it all off our flight was oversold and we had to wait while people were encouraged to give up their seats for others so at least some of us could fly. I was the last one to get a seat forfeited by one of the volunteers so managed to get on board.

Sheesh, so much for the American aviation network

Anyway, I no complain, here's a few pics from the voyage down south...

A Thorn amongst Roses. A US Airways machine stuck between a bunch of WestJet 737s....
Image

Arriving at Denver, yep apparently some snow on the ground...
Image

A United CRJ parked at the gate....
Image

CRJs for Africa around these parts...
Image

The awesome (IMHO) Southwest livery, presently being replaced by a ghastly new one. LOADs of Southwest and United machines here as Denver is a hub for both..
Image

There were at least two United B787s on the ground while I was there...
Image

Finally got to see my first MD-80, love these machines...
Image

And finally the broken wiper on our ERJ which was holding up our departure to Dallas, yes this old dude is attacking the blade with a pair of pliers...
Image

Leaving Dallas in the evening so may not get any more pics from here sadly, possibly a few more from Vancouver when I head home on the weekend.

Fixing the window wiper, I have a great little cartoon I have to scan and post to your, this thread ... Humanization operation :D , I also noticed the trusty 'Harman' aircraft tugs, WWII design - those are 1950 models but show how good they are, used on aircraft carrier decks right into the 1980s simply they were so hardy to the cold ... superb photos tho I'm almost getting a cold with that snow.

Hey lads. Got home to Hamilton this morning after a final flight from Vancouver. To wrap up the trip I have two more batches of pics to share.

This first set is from our departure from Dallas Fort Worth on Wednesday. I was "stuck" here for around 4 hours as there had been 200 flights cancelled earlier in the day due to snow and freezing rain overnight. We were supposed to be flying with United but the incoming delayed flight meant we'd not make our connection in Denver so we eventually got on a direct flight with American. To cut a long story short I had loads of time to wander about with the camera.

Man what a place. It's an American Airlines major hub with a significant presence by United, and lesser domestic usage by Spirit, Alaskan and others along with international airlines operating from Terminal D. You'd hardly know there was any other airline than American though, they must have had 50 or more aircraft at the gate at any one time. This place is HUUUUGE!! (with a capital H) like everything in Texas. There are 6 Terminals laid out across the site in two rows of three with a high level monorail connecting them and offering amazing views of the gates as you run around.

Old livery and new on display here, about a quarter of the aircraft at Terminal C alone...
Image

A couple of Next Gen 737s glistening away the afternoon in the old livery...
Image

One of what would have been close to a dozen MD80s that were at the American terminals at any one time, love this machine, and the silver top livery...
Image

Closeup of the MD80 office, lots of rivets to count here...
Image

One of the 738s in the new livery, I'd say around half of the fleet was old and half new...
Image

Quite a few 757's about the place, but outnumbered by other machines by quite a margin..
Image

Not as many Airbuses about, I think these have been inherited from the US Airways fleet post merger...
Image

One of only two 767s I saw while we were here....
Image

Bit of a crap photo but was cool to spot this machine which American painted up in a retro livery recently...
Image

Spirit airlines had a bunch of their Airbuses operating during the day in different liveries...
Image

Loads of regional machines at Terminal B which were interesting to see. ERJ 135s, 145s...
Image

And CRJs of various models...
Image

And I think that will about do it. >nzflag<

Its a funny old do, but a always think of Colorado as being a hot, dry, desert, sunny State, being so far South, from my You-Tube videos of Harley Davidson Riders enjoying themselves amongst the gorgeous scenery....
...but some of my Flight Sim Chums who live there, tell be it can be just as cold and snowy as Northern Canada, (or my Bedroom before Central Heating was invented).
I can easy be fooled by various weather conditions throughout the US!

Even Texas can experience Snow!

Its not always Cold up North, and Hot down South!

...I always prefer Hot!

Any nice shots of the fantastic scenery down below, Deenknow?

I love the Mountain/Desert scenery in the US Western lower States!

Thanks Lads.

Paul: sadly as it was a work trip the only scenery I got to take in was of the airports :) Was a shame as it certainly looked great from the air. I have had a few trips to Oregon and California before and got up into the hills and lakes etc but would have loved to have done the same in Colorado and Texas. The Texas snow event isnt as rare as you might think, the lads I was working with were locals and said they last had snow about 6 years ago. What is also common is freezing rain during the winter which really plays havoc as they just dont have the infrastructure to deal with it, and the drivers really dont know how to drive safely in winter conditions, makes for some crazy motorway pile-ups apparently.

I did get to go for a day trip up to Squamish and Whistler when in Vancouver though during my only day off, some pics on my flickr account following if youre interested...

PS here's a couple of pics of where I was staying and working in Dallas the morning after the snow.

Get that defroster going ....

The third photo down with the "Shell" sign!

Cables everywhere in the USA!
Typical of what we see in places such as India....

Overhead cables as far as the eye can see. Like spiders webs!... ...!

In England most/all of the cables are buried underground out of sight!

It has been suggested that exposed, overhead cables are more easy located and repaired than cables buried underground...
...but they can be a terrible eye-sore!

A nightmare!...>>> https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=overh ... 58&bih=813

Cables...AND SNOW in Texas!.... ...!

Lovely shots, Deeknow.....keep em coming!..... :D ....!

Paul....Cable me...... :wink2: ...!

Great photos of the AA aircraft, funny thing with the polished fleet , the had the skins on the aircraft replaced a lot more regular, polishing aluminum gradually wears the alloy down and making it weaker, more noticeable was on the 757 fleet.

Huh, that's interesting to know Ian, thanks.
Does look pretty cool. I LOVED that time spent at KDFW, for anyone into aviation it was such a buzz to see SO MANY machines on the ground and moving about, and for a kiwi to see a lot of variants we don't get down-under.

All those pics in the set above were taken from the monorail that runs around between the terminals, is ruddy brilliant, you're looking straight down over the gates.

No not for Newcastle pop, but I recon its a bit sad loosing the public viewing areas at airports .. and one thing Christchurch did pride itself on was the viewing deck was the best in New Zealand , very typical off companies current, maybe ;) .... a Monorail is what is needed.

Right lads, sorry to flog a dead horse, but here's the last couple of pics from the final leg on the way home. Arrived in good time out at Vancouver airport, not a bad place to hang out. The international terminal is long with nice views either side of the apron and aircraft and one on side a decent view of one of the active runways. Parked myself in a recliner chair with a view out a clean piece of glass and snapped a couple of final pics for your edutainment.

Alaska (operated by Horizon) are a regular sight here, some jets but a good few of these 400 series Dash's, definitely a great looking machine for a pencil plane
Image

Was STOKED to see one of these fabulous Dornier 328s, I reckon they're a lovely looking machine, and not much chance of seeing one down-under sadly..
Image

Another Central Mountain Air machine, this time a 1900D. Nothing new to kiwis but cool to see them in yet another livery here...
Image

WestJet are a major operator here being a Canadian low-cost airline. Sadly I didn't get many chances to get a clear shot of one of their Next Gens (they operate a bunch of each of the 6/7/800s) but here's one of a 600 touching down and smoking up the tires..
Image

Another budget airline, this time an off-shoot of Air Canada, named "Rouge" for obvious reasons. They have a couple of 767-300s and a bunch of A319s. This 76 was taxiing for take-off just as I was called for boarding..
Image

And finally my ride home, and the end of this plane spotting, ahem, I mean work trip to Canada. ZK-OKD 777-200...
Image

Hope you've enjoyed these lads. Was a great trip re eye-candy, north america is good like that

Now how about getting a work trip to the South-West USA, Dean; for a peek at the wonderful CA, AZ, NV, UT, NM, CO, scenery there?

(Its nice and warm there, as well).... :wink2: ...!

Get a posting in San Francisco, and take us on a few trips from there!

Forget the Aeroplanes...just show me the Scenery!.... ...!
