Apologize!

But I do not understand the real meaning of the theme this month.
It's a bit hard for me to catch the feeling.
I've checked on wikipedia to know excactly what ANZAC is, but I don't understand the relation with aviation

ANZAC or ANZACS have been given all all Australian and New Zealand armed forces since , this months April 25th is the 100 years since the now renamed ANZAC cove on the Dardanelles/Galipoli campaign in 1915 course the day when they storm the Peninsular.

Ever since that date the two countries Australian and New Zealand have used the the acronym for all forces , Air Force included , these served all over the world and and with all three services.

One thing well known is the history off many European country's , France , Belgium , Holland have followed the aircrews and looked after them and buried them all under the ANZAC banner, this has not changed all over the world , severing Korean, Vietnam , the Gulf and Afghanistan, the Pacific policing thru the Islands.

This covers a huge area from aircraft from military strike to Help and relief forces , ANZACS are generally well known in memory to the date 100 years ago.

As a non Kiwi investigating 'ANZAC' on the internet, there's little or no mention of the RNZAF. Of course it is part of the ANZ forces and is included in ANZACS as is the RNZN.

I have not checked the the internet, a lot of information basic, I'm not surprised it is not there, ... many history books I have here covers ANZACS in three services , I'll scan the content page of the book ANZACS .

Even today the naval connection is reflected calling our two Royal New Zealand Navy Frigates , the ANZAC Class and these were used in the Gulf patrolling with Australian as the ANZAC contingent and along with other naval forces.

Well folks - ANZAC Day 2015 is a huge, defining, centenary. I think I owe it to all ANZACS to try and commemorate them in some way ... so I'm back - for the screenshot threads at least!

Image

It is thought that the acronym "A.N.Z.A.C." was created by a clerk in WWI for use with a rubber stamp. It's written out in full on the screenshot for the benefit of our foreign visitors!

There were very few British aircraft used in the *early* days of 1915 in Turkey or Gallipoli, but they did include a seaplane variant of the Sopwith "Tabloid" (pictured above, without floats).

The quote is from a poem by Mike Subritzky - and is worth quoting in full:

SPIRIT OF ANZAC

They clad us in the colours of the forest,
and armed us with the weapons made for war.

Then taught to us the ancient trade of killing,
and lead us to the sound of battles roar.

So give us comfort as we lay down bleeding,
and pray upon our cold and stiffened dead.
But mark our place that we might be accounted,
this foreign soil becomes our graven bed.

Now children place upon this stone a garland,
and learn of us each Anzac Day at dawn.
We are New Zealand's dead from distant conflict,
our sacrifice remembered ever more.

Mike Subritzky

Bob, Marty, Ian - thanks for the welcome back. It's good to be "home".

@Bug - I'm delighted you used the Anson. Bob and I have been lucky to see it in RL at air displays - it's a beauty. That aircraft will be *very* familiar to all wartime NZ pilots.

Needless to say, composition and lighting are superb!

The last of the Mohicans. An ANZAC Tribute in No 5 & 6 Squadrons RNZAF 1939-1945

No 6 Sqn RNZAF - KN-K, NZ4053 Consolidated Catalina PBY-5. NZ4053 was in service at Lauthala Bay Suva Fiji from 1943-1945, to provide aerial reconnaissance needs for
the Fijian Islands which at the time appeared to be under imminent threat of Japanese invasion.

Fifty-six Catalina's (NZ4001-NZ4056) were operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force between 1943 and 1953.
After World War Two only half a dozen or so of the best flying boats were maintained in service with No. 5 Squadron (squadron code became KN-) The remainder
of the aircraft were put into storage at Auckland's RNZAF Base Hobsonville in 1953.
All of the Catalina's were eventually scrapped at Hobsonville, the last six including NZ4053 in December 1955

Flying over RNZAF Base Wigram, which is also now just a memory.

Seeing Adam's avatar back on here certainly brightens my day. If Marty had a flight helmet like his, they could pass for twins.
