Just had a reply on the News ... Nothing like the 'John Bannerman' incident June 6th 2003.

Dose make for interesting read .. when it happened it was pea soup here , and was questions about the pilots capability from the very start, I knew two pilots spoke about his procedure and questioned it , I knew one who flew with him and appeared to him he got lost and only found his way finding then tracking the West Coast to Nelson on the very same aircraft.

One thing pointed out after the two witness's were able to reply or recall thoughts when in Palmy, the group started to question and chat to the about the pilot whether they thought he was capable to fly ?

I was just wondering, (as I often do... :rolleyes: ...), what would be the pros and cons of a forced belly landing, wheels up, on the grass, (if available), as compared to the hard runway surface?

Paul.....mostly found in wonderland.... :wink2: ...!

As an aside....I often observe the CFI at my local airfield landing the club's Cessna 150/152 Trainers on the grass, (when dry), as opposed to the parallel Tarmac/concrete runway....

....he reckons its less wear, (the usual "chirp" when landing), on the expensive tyres!.... :thumbup: ...!

Strange with the Christchurch crash ... had over three miles of runway ... apparently said or pretended he knew how to use GPS but obviously proved .... well .. the result , all that tarmac and to miss it .

Bad weather, clouds, poor visibility, and darkness....

The situations I always avoid flying in, in all of my Sim Flights!

When I go for a Sim Flight I always pre-select good/perfect flying conditions....

...otherwise I stay on the ground, and put the kettle on!.... :wink2: ...!

Observing my Flight Sim Chums flying amongst fluffy clouds in their General Aviation screen-shots, always gives me cause for concern!
I always keep well clear of clouds...they are designed to kill you in the air...and get me wet on my Motor-bike...!... :unsure: ....!

Paul...."Longevity" is my middle name!.... :D ...!

Hey ya Paul.... of "Longevity" must be some English town somewhere :) .. when the crash happened , I got the closes FS aircraft I could get , back then it was all FS2004 when building an update for NZCH , went to real world weather , used GPS and scored a hit smack on the runway, when looking at the actual photo off the crash, not only was he miles short also the many deg.s was way off, least 3 to 4 :unsure:

It is preferred to do a wheels up on the hard runway as on grass there is always a chance of digging in and finishing belly up far better to scrape the bottom of the aircraft than turn turtle and damage the top as well.

Touché....!
I spend most of my FSX Flight Sim time, every day, reading the world news, regarding accidents, disasters, floods, wildfires, etc, etc, then getting my trusty Cessna 150 out of my Hanger to explore the affected areas at very low level, with the help of FS Tramp/Plan-G, Wikipedia, and Google Sat Maps!

Interesting Geography lessons!

It is an extra interest adding real world disasters tho FSX dose have its limitations.
