Videos, and uploading to You-Tube...

Postby Fozzer » Sun May 24, 2015 7:47 pm

Hello Chums!

My latest project is taking videos of the English Countryside with my new SJ CAM, Sport Camera, attached to my Motorcycle....>>>

http://www.sjcam.com/cameras/9-sj4000-f ... t-dvr.html

I take the videos, and assemble and edit them successfully, using; "Windows Movie Maker".

The problem comes when I try to store the finished videos in a free Internet site!

I can upload them to "Dropbox" quite quickly (in 5-8 minutes), but using Dropbox, I can only store a maximum of 2 GB on its site, so when I reach that limit I then have to delete existing videos to make more room for new ones....>>> https://www.dropbox.com/

To overcome this restriction, I have tried to upload the same videos to You-Tube, with no luck whatsoever!
Clicking on "Upload", for my 5/10/15-minute video files, I am presented with an estimated time to complete the upload, which can run into hundreds of hours, so I have to stop the upload by closing the page!

Is this normal, many hours/days, for uploading files to You-Tube?

Do any of my Flight Sim Chums have similar difficulties in uploading their video files to You-Tube...and is there a cure?

Paul... ...!

Dan post a couple off links a few days back 'Kemie Cam' two 17 minute videos, the longest I have done was just on two and 2.5 minutes https://plus.google.com/112367808932733886578/posts , but others have achieved that 10 minute mark , I believe its just the upload time

I just had a couple of questions when I read your post:
What size are individual videos?
What sort of internet connection do you have?

Your internet connection sounds good -- if you are uploading videos in under 10 minutes to Dropbox then you are very lucky. As I'm stuck with ADSL until I am earning again, I'm used to very slow uploads -- each issue of my Subscription (1.2GB) takes 3 hours full-speed. The trick is to get it right first time:)

Dropbox does promote itself as a good way to share videos, so you might just want to look at some other options -- for example, Onedrive a 15GB free, and it's NZ$10 a month for 1TB plus Office 365 -- Dropbox is US$10 for 1TB, so a bit dearer with the difference in currencies.

(I do have 1TB on Onedrive for a year, it came free with my tablet, along with Office 365, but until I have 'proper' internet I can't really use it as I have 40GB/month limit on ADSL-- and most goes to Netflix.)

But of course the best way for videos -- because it is free and plenty of storage -- is Youtube. I'm not sure why you'd get such poor performance on Youtube, but it would be worthwhile looking into the issues. That's why I asked the size of individual videos, and how the performance compares to your optimal upload speed.

Maybe you could scrunch them a bit in Movie Maker. If I make a video at the 'recommended' settings, it might turn out 500MB for 5 minutes, whereas setting it to the 'Youtube' setting makes it only 200MB. Sure, the quality reduces a bit (video quality, not size) but that's a small price to pay for nice quick videos.

Hello Ian... :D ...!

Ta for the reply!

Some of my Motorcycle videos are up to 10+ minutes in length...
..and it takes bloody DAYS for me to upload them to You-Tube...

....its ridiculous!...Life is far too short for me to wait DAYS for the video files to upload to You-Tube.... :( ..!
Something must be going wrong somewhere!

I've given up at the moment!

I will be boxed-up long before the video has finished uploading!

Paul...all I need is a video on You-Tube.... ...1

Hello Rob...

My latest video was 20 minutes it total length. 3.3 GB in size after editing in Windows Movie Maker, recording 1080FHD, 1920 X 1080, at 30 Frames per second.
The file size is slightly smaller when recording at 720P, 1280 X 720, 30FPS...

..but it still takes bloody weeks to upload to You-Tube!

Do all You-Tube users have this uploading problem?

Paul....he of little patience... ...!

I used to have this issue too - until fibre became available to our area - and it costs the same. Now I upload 1Mb/s - which is pretty awesome.

Hello Paul - since uploads are generally about 10% of downloads, most ISPs only provide a low upload speed. That said, I have put some large files up to Gurgle Drive, which uploaded pretty quickly, and I was asked if I wanted to upload to YouTube instead, wh didn't surprise me since Gurgle own YouTube these days.

Hope this helps

I'm recording all these lovely recordings of the English countryside every day on my Motor Bike, and no way of publishing them on You Tube for free!

Other folks seem to be able to do so....

I can run them...but no-one else can!

Buggar!

Depending on which version of Movie Maker you use, you should be able to get much smaller files. Here's a screenshot of my Save Movie menu, with the Youtube settings highlighted -- as you can see, it estimates 37.14 MB per minute of video. So a 20 minute video should be about 750MB. note that this is still 1080p.

This would still take me a while to upload, nearly two hours, but it is a lot more manageable.
