Ripapa

Postby toprob » Thu Jul 23, 2015 5:55 pm

I have been checking out Ripapa Island, which is close by, and I could walk out there at low tide.... An interesting place, with a lot of history for something the size of a breadbox. Closed at the moment though, with earthquake damage.

One interesting thing which the DOC page doesn't cover isthe fascinating story of Felix von Luckner, who was imprisoned on Ripapa towards the end of WWI.

Something I like to research a little more, right up my alley simply the history , amazing with Adams post , many off the Islands in the Pacific .. Samoa is a good example had a huge German connection .. then during WWI would be the most famous ... SMS Emden , and old Captain ‎Karl von Müller ... his trek across the Pacific .... seriously is Movie material B-)

I've split this bit off from Adam's post, as I do get carried away sometimes... Sorry, Adam.

Yaaah  most posts have some connection to the base topic , generally rather the so called "Hi-Jack" ... I would call it the "Anchor" topic B-)

The 'Emden' captured and sank a dredger ( 'Ponrabbel') which my paternal grandfather was delivering from Clydeside (Scot) to Launceston (Tas). That was in the Indian Ocean, not long before HMAS Sydney attacked and drove the Emden ashore.

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Hell off a Jaunt around the Pacific and the final Indian Ocean incident for the period , the tricks and some off the audacious runs into other South East Asian ports ... still recon would be great movie material ... Sure the Cocos won't mind the Sir PJ in there for a while.

No problem at all, Rob - I was quite happy to "live and learn"! Now I can follow this one too ;)
