Windows 10

Postby toprob » Wed Jul 29, 2015 5:13 pm

This is rolling out at the moment, although even if you've reserved yours, it looks like some of us might have to wait for a while -- maybe days.

I guess that most of us will be waiting for some sort of assurance that our sims will keep on working before we take the plunge, but I thought I'd set up this thread for anyone who wants to be a guinea-pig, or who wants clarification on anything related to Win 10.

I won't be in any hurry to upgrade my development desktop, but I am pretty confident that the simulator will work ok -- I'm just not too sure about all the little tools which I've collected over the years. On the other hand, I can't wait to have it on my tablet, and I have also 'reserved' it on my old machine, which may or may not really annoy my flatmate -- on the one hand, she would benefit from a newer OS, on the other hand she might not like the changes from Win 7...

Personally I've loved Windows 8, the most reliable OS I've ever used, and I have no doubts about Win 10, apart from the points I've made about compatibility. I did join the 'insider' prog for the 10 Technical Preview, but it didn't install on my tablet. I didn't even get the 'invite' on the tablet until a few days ago, so obviously they have solved the wimboot issues. Initially, too, the old PC reported that it couldn't be upgraded -- incompatible processor -- but today it decided it was Win10-compatible, so I've pressed the 'go' button. Just a matter of waiting my turn, which as I said, might take a while.

If anyone does get to upgrade, not counting the TP version, let us know how you get on here. Try to keep the negative stuff to a minimum, I've heard too many people telling me things like 'FSX didn't like Windows 8' etc, which I think are just hearsay, 'someone told me that someone told them...'

However if anything does go wrong, or doesn't work as intended, then let us all know asap!

Just downloading now..... There is an official Windows 10 download site now so you don't have to wait. Found a bug already, if your download hangs and you get the error message "somethings happened", try changing your locale to US English from NZ English or whatever you have it set as. Unbelievable! Took me an hour to sort this out, quite a common problem by the looks of it.

I'm happy to wait, although since I wasn't able to reserve it until the last couple of days on either of the machines I hope to upgrade, I might be waiting a while... Yesterday I used about 4GB more than my normal daily useage, so something is happening.

Owen -- glad to hear about your upcoming Lotto win, I won last week, so I think that's my luck for the month. Well, when I say 'won' I don't mean first division. Or second. Or third, fourth, fifth... division 6 it was, without Powerball.

I just fired up the Mylotto site, to check how many divisions there were, and even though I wan't logged in, it flashed up 'congratulations on your win' for a split second, so it might know something about next week's draw...

I've always been a big fan of windows, without them a home is just a box. I like the fact that they allow light in, so much so that I named my website after them. And I do have a thing about anything window-related -- one of my favourite words is 'defenestration'.

To class up the joint, here's one of my favourite poems.

Defenestration; R P Lister

And the computer activist Richard Stallman said:
Now of course people who want freedom shouldn't use Windows at all, you've got to defenestrate your computer, which mean either you throw Windows out of the computer, or you throw the computer out the window.

Yeah - and this is from the people who want me to let them into my home network so they can reset it to meet their requirements...they create a huge variety of "Englishes" but write an installer that only works for the US variety. That sort of thing is a fundamental check for any software release :swear: :swear:
I hope the 'Team Leader' who let that one through is now on his way to the guillotine.

I guess if you need to ask, then you probably don't need to upgrade. At least not until support for Win 7 ceases. But you are talking six year's development and improvements in security etc, since Windows 7 was released.
