The silver fern isn't actually All Blacks intellectual property. Our soccer team, our net ball team, our Commonwealth Games and Olympic athletes, our Equestrian team, all share the fern,. It's not the property of one team... They just happen to market it better

Hmmm that is interesting, Kyle Lockwood, what looks copied, something damn close then puts his name to it ...

Apparently Kyle Lockwood is claiming his design predates the air force patch and they may have infringed his copyright! His red, white and blue Silver Fern/Southern Cross is the only half-decent design/colour combination on the shortlist and was previously my favourite, but I have gone off it. It seems to be accepted practice in flag design to only have one major element on the flag as the main focal point (such as Canada's maple leaf) so the Lockwood design may be too "busy".

Even though I'm against changing the flag, I do like Red Peak which is gaining support (much to Key's annoyance, no doubt ). Here's some perspective on that from here in the UK:

New Zealanders offered flag shortlist ask: can we have this one instead?

Red Peak is a good representation of night and dawn ("first to the light"), has both red, white and blue (Union Flag) and red, white and black (Maori) and is reminiscent of marae wall carvings. Originally, I liked the design but thought it looked more like a political party logo than a flag, but it does look good in amongst these other international flags, unique and immediately stands out:

Support for 'Red Peak' flag on the rise

Personally, I think it should be a three-way vote between the existing flag, Red Peak and the silver fern on a solid black background (which already flies widely in NZ).

Now that would be bloody funny if that is sour grapes on this boy Kyle Lockwood's part ... now we need to go in search of that shoulder patch's history.

What would be extra funny ... I think John'y boy likes that style ... could another storm in a tea cup... or maybe need to wash the flag in a tea cup?

Reporter Q: John , do you believe your have chosen to infringed his copyright!

John A: I don't think so , I don't recall ?

Repoter Q: Will this cause a slap in the face with a wet tea towel or a wet flag

John A: I don't think so , I don't recall ?

Although it is not very likely, I do love the idea of the 'people's choice' Red Peak winning out, it would be a very positive thing all round, the government could be seen to be very magnanimous, and it would satisfy a lot of people who see a new flag as some sort of hidden agenda.

It was never a design I particularly noticed, but if the people really make their choice known, then I'm very happy to go along with it. Viva la Revolution!

No, not like you noticing the pointy thing ... its the "Viva la Revolution!" .... sleeping dogs again maybe.

Ade figured out the flag that should sway above the prisons is ideal for the convicts .. a two pronged attack "Viva la Revolution!" B-)

Recently, during a vote for independence from the United Kingdom by the Scots, would have meant losing one of the "crosses" on our Union Flag (NOT Union Jack!).
They didn't get independence, (we English like them!), so no change to our Flag...
...it remains nice and colourful...and full of crosses!....Which is nice!.... :groupwave: ...!

Although there was some popular speculation that the flag would change, the Union Flag represents the union of the Crowns not the parliaments so there was no legal requirement to change even if the Scots had voted yes. An independent Scotland would have remained in the monarchy, with the Queen adopting an additional, separated role as Queen of Scotland much the same as in the Commonwealth realms like NZ where she is head of state.

Scotland would have adopted the Saltire as their flag, but the rest of us could still have used the Union Flag. I rather liked the idea of altering the blue for black (representing Wales) though, had there been a change.

That said, I'm very glad Scotland voted to stay! :D

Nice to see another UK local on here Paul (though I'm almost an NZ local as well now!)

Well,'Red Peak' has made the ballot, I'm quite astounded, but pleased -- I did say that it would make sense to include it, giving the government some credit for listening to the people, but I didn't really think it would happen.

Although I won't be voting for Red Peak, and find it amusing that it was one of the lowest rated flag before the final four.... I think it's good the govt is putting it in, as this the people's choice vote.

The 'official' petition to add Red Peak has 62,000 votes which is 1.4% of the country .... \_(ツ)_/¯

Here is the newly added red peak flag to go with the feather flags

Image

Why wasn't this one added too it would have saved a few million dollars instead of having to vote again next year.

That's the one I like, and can instantly recognise as being New Zealand!

Simple, straight forward, and to the point.

...and nice and colourful!

Doug... you shoulda been a flag designer!
Square flags make such a big statement...

Mind you, there's still time to pass retrospective legislation squeezing in that second one!
You'd have to offset the cost of reprinting the referendum ballot papers, is all.

Doug, I certainly didn't see that coming, having to call Godwin's Law on this thread. Feeling a bit pissed off, after laying out the rules in the OP, but also a certain degree of admiration...
