Mega "whoops" moment for XH498 at NZWN in 1959. "What was that?" ... the port undercarriage having a "close encounter" with the embankment ...

Image

"The Vulcan was taking part in a airshow being held to mark the official opening of Wellington International Airport, formerly known as Rongotai Airport.
After demonstrating a ' touch-and-go ' on Runway 34 the Vulcan came around again to make a full stop landing.
Turbulence and wind shear caused the jet bomber to land short of the runway threshold, clipping the embankment at the Moa Point or southern end with its port undercarriage leg which was severely damaged and unable to support the aircraft. The port wing tip nearly scraped the runway surface before the pilot was able to lift off again."

Thanks, Marty - I must admit I was struggling a little, as my plan was to do something very "Air Truk flavoured" - maybe even that (even worse) Polish thing - the Belphegor!

I wanted this encounter to be a tad closer, but staging this took hours and dozens of trials already. But you can see the A-4 have their gear down from the missed approach. This is Auckland, by the way.

The A-4 is from Mike Pearson, the Boeing is from AIG and painted by Ray Parker.

I will replace it in case I manage to do better.

WTH was that???

Oh I see,.... Hmmm, .....The type rating instructor never said what to do if this happens. So I guess it is just - keep calm and carry on, try to not get too wet. Don't get into a flap. It is not as if I cooked my goose .

C337 Turbo, 7500 ft crossing Cook Strait was on route to AA guess it is stop in WN now.

LOL And anyway it was flapping straight towards me at - say at 35.5 knots, me going 200 I.A.S, well you get the picture ...OH, wait a minute,,, You got the goose. ! well , some of it anyway.

I really do like/prefer the front seat but if that is a way trying to get me inside .... think we better figure out a better way.

Oops, almost forgot the comp this month.
This is me exiting Taieri Airfield earlier this month. "What the hell was that?!" when the ambo was trying to put a line in my arm and we went over that damn pothole...
