The run in ...

Postby Splitpin » Mon Dec 28, 2015 8:59 pm

I had now idea that these guys bombed from so low (Vietnam) , until i watched a dvd on it. They would dive and lob the weapon , sometimes A-4's at treetop height with napalm ..
Not sure if the schemes are from that era or not , its the angle and armament that interests me .... the end result of a real life situation is hard to imagine .....

The tactic is a popup attack and it can be also through other methods of delivery CCIP/CCRP/Manual and DTOS (loft).
Back then the delivery was not very accurate and pilots had to be extremely good in order to put bombs on tgt.

Most common was manual although aircraft did have A/G radar on some types and could CCRP using the radar to lock onto the tgt and then the computer would release the bombs over the tgt. Manual mode involves having the right speed and dive angle and releasing the bombs in a steep dive to hit the tgt. Lofting/DTOS was also used its a standoff release where the aircraft pulls up and releases the bombs in a climb lobbing them at the tgt. :plane:

You can do these methods on the A-10C. :wink2:

I remember doing this in Jane's F15-E, still the most comprehensive military flightsim ever made.
You roll inverted before the apex, which is when you are at your most vulnerable. And watch the SAMs come up at you...

The APEX is the Pull down point, you roll inverted because it allows a faster change in pitch in a positive G manner otherwise nasty positive G at Pull up and Negative G at pull down would result in a red out if too much. The manner of which this is done is counted in seconds from pull down, roll out, pickle and then you start egressing toward the OA2.

The F-15E was good that Janes modeled but the F-16 is quite awesome for popup attacks because we can insert HUD markers to help with the attack and they show up at certain points. For this we use the weapon delivery planner which is a nice program for making the calculations required to do a good by the book popup attack.

I haven't tested this yet with JHCMS on but when I get some spare time I'll give it a go and see if the markers show up on the helmet. :wink2:

Thanks for the reply and info SUBS ..... A little above my present DCS skill level , but thanks for taking the time.

@Charl .... I still have a couple of those Janes titles , and your right , "still the most comprehensive military flightsim ever made" , 100% immersion .... loved it (always died ^_^ ) but i learnt something every time .
Sadly the old reflexes (or lack of) have put paid to my wanna be "top gun" aspirations ..... just screenshots now :)

Marty how are you liking P3D? Great screens! Are you running v2 or v3? I would Highly recommend v3 of you haven't. V3.1 is performance enhancing and sets the foundation for some remarkable game changeing infrastructure in flight sim.
