Back from AKL

Zoomed home last night in 1 hour 4 mins on JQ239 ... nice flight.
Time up there was pretty short , but managed to cram in MOTAT , Ardmore , the big museum on the hill ... thank goodness for a GPS in the rental.
Its been while since i navigated the Auckland motorway system .. a tad daunting if your not used to it , however , except for one exit overshoot , i did well.

I have to say , the drivers up there are a lot more tolerant than down here . If you indicate a lane change (even at the last minute) they let you move.

I used "About NZ rentals " , older cars , but everything I needed , plus free pick up and drop off at the end . Stayed at the airport Ibis ... again basic but clean and well priced.

Spent a little time with the spotter brothers (nephews) , but mostly with my brother . For me , Ardmore was the highlight and spent most of the day there yesterday watching a couple of Harvard's doing circuits with all the other GA stuff.
The warbirds visitor centre is well worth a look. ... really nice people and a great atmosphere and an amazing library upstairs.
Weather was perfect , all in all a great but short break.
The lads got ... hundreds of photos , some of which I'll share during the week. I only took a couple which I'll post when I get time.

The only downside was waiting to board for the flight home . As I left the security area I noticed people sitting on the floor in the corridor that leads to 2 of the gates.
As I got closer the crowd got bigger ..... I estimated 300 plus people in an area designed for 100 . It was hot , it smelt like a portaloo ... not good at all .
Finally got to board only to find a guy in my seat ... 13A ... more leg room and a window , a small one , but a window.
With the assistance of one of the cabin crew (delightful young lady ) we got him moved to the next seat ..where for the next hour or so he sniffed , spat into a paper cup , sneezed onto his phone screen and wiped it on the seat in front , while the smell of his 2 bags of Chinese takeaways in the overhead locker drifted through the cabin and into my carry on ... charming

But , i suppose ... you pay the price , and it was cheap ...so you take your chances . -_-

:D Pleased ya got the window seat .. some reason they took out the window whined down handles .. ya no .. old school Mirror Minor sorta thingys ... MOTAT , almost a Ferrymead , like you pointed out we need a NZ aviation Museum , again Wigram would become the ideal spot , it has the room but also has the history to go with .

Cars .. never got to that stage ... but i'm guessing be sure has hell lot cheaper that a taxi to the city or MOTAT ... or even the bus , as I said Marty , you the lads Chris and Jono and ya Bro ,, stop here next !

I can imagine, it's been a long, long time since I drove in Auckland, maybe 35 years? although I've been back since, I tend to use public transport now... The skyline was a bit different back then -- no skytower!

That was one part off my bike trips I really liked .. on one,l got to the bar and at least 50% of the people in the bar, I knew them all and most all from the then 'Bush Inn courts' club and bar ... that was one great trip across the ditch, then the massive exodus from the the ship five, two couples on bike of all types , we got a buzz job from a NZ Rail Air Freight Dak an hour Welly, evening on the bike you even got locked in traffic in Auckland ..... Shhhh Don't tell anyone  I made it on, in one trip Wellington to Auckland parked in five and a half hours.

Its a great place indeed .
Forgot to mention my partner booked a 2 hour flightsim session for me (didn't know until the day I left) at a place in St Johns ...Virtual Flight.... for my birthday.
Run by a Dutch guy "Herman" . His set up is very impressive .. flying on my single monitor will never be the same .

Biggest thing as I mentioned before , was Getting that window seat .. you get a few .. .. then as the flight continues they get to understand exactly why ya require that window seat .. course the best example was the German tourists , and da course the return flight from NZFF meeting at Tauranga , the lady really went .... like throw the paper out .. I think this is were you promote yourself , but also to make it interesting to someone who simply ya not going to meet again.

It's only in the last few years that I came to realise most of the recognisable buildings in the Auckland skyline were built in the last twenty years. I first visited NZ in 2000, so most were already established, but it's still changed significantly even since then. Watching the Auckland scenes The Quiet Earth (made in 1985) were quite a revelation for me.

As for motorways, I'm always quite proud of the fact I can drive all over Auckland without a map even after four years away as happened a few years ago. I don't think that'll last though, as the new Waterview connection is sure to confound me once it opens next year!

Thanks, Marty. I'll look forward to it.

I didn't make it over this year as I fell short of my minimum budget for the trip, but I have more classes booked for the new academic year so am hopeful for a long overdue return in 2017. It'll be five years by then, which is my longest ever gap between trips. I am hoping to be over there for longer and may even be scoping for work next time though. We'll see.

I'll sink a beer or two with you, whatever happens.
